Trivia

Towards the end of the film, Stone (Ice Cube) uses the phrase "Son of a bitch stole my line" in response to the President's speech. This line was spoken by Dr. Maguire (Robin Williams) in Good Will Hunting (1997). See more »

Goofs

After the boat explosion, Agent Steele shoots 3 times (there are gunshots and muzzle flashes), but his finger never touches the trigger, it's straight along the side of the pistol. See more »

Maurice: What the hell does the Department of Homeland Defense want with a truck full of cheese anyway?
Webster: You ain't never heard of government cheese?

Alternate Versions

The UK version was trimmed slightly for a scene where a man is stabbed from behind to remove "detail of the knife emerging from his stomach". This was done before formal classification by the BBFC and was done after being given advice by them during post-production so that they could secure a 12A certificate. See more »

Ignore the critics, this ridiculous, over the top action movie is great fun if you switch your brain off
2 May 2005 | by DrLeneraSee all my reviews

Sometimes people, especially professional film critics, seem to miss the point. This film intends to be nothing more than a fun dumb action movie, with most of the required elements ramped up to insane level. No,it's not art. It's completely silly and unrealistic. But,it you switch your brain off,it's kind of fun. It's certainly better than the first XXX,which although entertaining in parts was seriously weakened by some horrible dialogue {"think Playstation"}, an obsession with trying to better James Bond, and Vin Diesel, surely one of the most uncharismatic and simply bad stars around.

The film does actually have a plot, yes it's unbelievable, and it may be hard to take the US President in the film trying to promote peace and greater understanding between the US and other nations {mmmmm},but the story does progress and is not just a chain to link the action together.

Of course,if you want action, here it is in spades. Director Lee Tamahori tries to conceal Ice Cube's inability to fight using hyper fast editing and does not quite succeed, but other sequences such as a tank battle on a ship are excellently staged and edited for maximum impact. Yes,it could not probably happen, but does it really matter? When the lengthy final set piece comes along involving an out of control train,a car driving on the train track chasing it,and a guy hanging from a helicopter on ropes trying to pick up the President, well it's obvious we have completely left reality behind and are in the world of fantasy. No,some of the CGI here is poor and justifies the quick editing, but the filmmakers are not trying to be believable. They're trying to give you something more primal,a kind of equivalent of a roller-coaster ride. Despite my above comment saying this film is not art, maybe there is sort of crazy art to this.

What may be harder to stomach in this is the shameless pandering to white folk who love black gangsta culture and the transference of some of the sexist, destructive attitude of some of that to the film. I would have liked to have heard less rap and more of Marco Beltrami's just as cool sounding and slightly tongue in cheek score during the action, and could have done without every female looking like a 12 year old boy's fantasy figure with big breasts and tight outfits, although the filmmakers themselves seem more turned on by the fast cars in the film. As with the first one Samuel L.Jackson does not do enough. However,Ice Cube is really quite OK here,he possesses both a light touch and a hard edge. As for comments about him being too fat to be an action hero, well think about that for a minute and you might realise how offensive that sounds.

There are places for all kinds of films, and XXX2 deserves as much right to exist, and shows as much creativity, as whichever worthy, award winning literary adaptation is being praised to the skies by the critics right now. Switch off your brain and enjoy
