When Devasher cocks his handgun right before shooting the albino, the sound is that of a semi-auto pistol but he's clearly carrying a revolver.

Character error

When Ray and Mitch are talking about seeing Eddie Lomax, Ray says that he is a private investigator in Little Rock. But it plain by the meeting between Eddie and Mitch, that Lomax is in Memphis, not Little Rock.

Mitch is told by Mulholland they were billed 33hrs. Back at the office on the PC - if you add up the hours for the month of Dec/92, it totals 37.9hrs. You are then shown his time manually added up to be 28hrs then the actual bill is for 33hrs. Further if you look on the bill for Dec 22, the amount was 6.1hrs yet the PC shows only 5.1 hrs.

Strange weather here, at times. When Mitch is interviewed in Boston, it's winter and snow is everywhere. But when he and Abby arrive by car and U-Haul in Memphis, it's already autumn, with red and yellow leaves blanketing the streets. What happened to spring and summer? Then Kozinski and Hodges are murdered--around October 3rd, according to Mitch's computer search and the news item he finds. Yet soon after the funeral, the two FBI agents approach Mitch and know he's been with the firm for 8 weeks already. Which meant he and Abby must have arrived in early August, during the summer, well before the leaves changed color in Memphis.

Errors in geography

Memphis is on the EAST side of the Mississippi River. Boston is NORTHEAST, so the Mississippi River would be on the left. Instead, in the closing scene, Mitch drives SOUTH with the Mississippi on the right. Perhaps they decided to open a law firm in Atlanta, instead.

Factual errors

The cars of the Mud Island monorail leave and arrive at opposite ends at the same time. It would be impossible for the man following McDeere to leave his car and begin running for the other side before McDeere left his car.

Much of the Memphis story happens in November and December. When Mitch first copies the partners' time sheets, they're for 12-1 to 12-31 (1992). When he copies the summary accounts from Avery's computer, two of them say '1-15-93'. Yet for all this end-of-year activity, there are no Christmas decorations or ads seen anywhere in Memphis.

When Mrs. McDeere goes to the Cayman Island and agrees to sit with Avery, Avery orders two Havana Club from a waitress who he addresses by name . The waitress responds; "Okay Mr. Taylor" or "Right away Mr. Taylor. Was this misquoting of his name intentional perhaps to show he is of no importance to her or is it a goof by the actress playing the waitress?

Though it can be asked why the firm didn't pay the McDeeres' moving costs and fly them in from Boston first-class, it can also be argued that this was part of the strategy to keep them happy exclusively in Memphis. All the goodies were provided there only. Spreading the largess around (to Boston) would dilute this. The objective was to keep the couple happy in Memphis--and nowhere else--locking them into their new life.

Incorrectly regarded as goofs

Mitch is told that he did "second best" on the bar exam. Bar results do not list the individual's score, much less how that person ranked compared to other test takers. Rather, bar results just say whether the individual passed or failed. Additionally, such information is private, so no members of the firm could possibly know results beforehand.

Plot holes

In two shots it is suggested that the albino thug is sent from Memphis to Grand Cayman to stop Abby McDeere. In one he is seen to run towards the waiting plane, and in the other he is seen deplaning in Grand Cayman for a cab. A few moments later he is back in Memphis to chase Mitch McDeere after he ran from the office.

The small seaplane used to fly back and forth to the Caymans would take more than 7 hours, with a fuel stop somewhere, to cover that distance each way. That does not fit in the time line of the plot.

After visiting his brother, Ray, in prison, Mitch McDeere tells his wife that he had visited him. At that point in time, Mitch's residence was bugged, which would have meant that William Devasher would have known about Mitch's brother being in prison. Yet later, William Devasher learns about the fact from a prison guard.

There is no way that Tammy could have seen either of Devasher's two henchmen from under the desk in Eddie Lomax's office (the guy with the "dead blue eyes" and the other who's "going to limp for the rest of his life, because Eddie hit him with that cannon he keeps under the desk.")

The law firm inundates the new-hire with every possible benefit, lavish starting salary, house, car etc. But then they don't pay for their move from Boston to Memphis??? A U-Haul hooked behind a beat up Supra? With a job like this, one would expect that a moving company would be hired to do a door to door move including packing the whole household, while they would fly first class.

Mr. Voyles, Terrance's boss, tells Mitch on the bench in Washington D.C. that Terrance "has full authority to negotiate on our behalf." If that was true, then why did Mr. Voyles call Mitch a "fugitive" for "stealing 750 thousand dollars of our money."? If Terrance did, indeed, have "full authority," then he would not have had to ask Mr. Voyles for permission to get the $1.5 million originally requested.

Spoilers

The goof items below may give away important plot points.

Incorrectly regarded as goofs

When Agent Tarrance asks Mitch how he came up with mail fraud as a way of getting the firm, he says it was on the bar exam. He clearly got the idea in an earlier scene, when one of his clients complained about being overbilled, however, the fact that he knew it was illegal to mail the inaccurate documents to their clients likely could have been a question on the bar exam.

Plot holes

Eddie Lomax's secretary was under the desk when Eddie was shot. She never saw the killers because she was totally enclosed and hidden. Yet in a later scene with Mitch, she says she saw the killers and describes them, even the color of the albino's eyes.
