Blu-ray Review: My Bloody Valentine (1981) Collector’s Edition

  • DailyDead
Welcome to Valentine Bluffs, the little town with a big heart. Around those parts, though, that big heart might end up being stuffed inside a heart-shaped candy box by Harry Warden before February 14th is over and done with, but otherwise, it’s a great place to live.

As a kid, I only ever rented George Mihalka’s My Bloody Valentine once (for some dumb reason), and it was only until the remake was coming out in 2009 that I decided to rent it again, and was totally blown away, because 10-year-old Heather sure as hell didn’t appreciate just how great the original Mbv was and still is after all this time. One of those rare singular slashers that never made it into franchise territory, My Bloody Valentine is a pretty fantastic whodunit about a killer dressed up like a miner, similar to the M.O. of Harry Warden, a

Drive-In Dust Offs: Of Unknown Origin (1983)

Man versus Nature, Man versus Beast, Man versus Food; all mythical in status to varying degrees and most represented on the silver screen. Of Unknown Origin (1983) tackles the middle myth with a tongue firmly planted in its giant rat infested cheek and is an obsessive tour through a domestic hellscape.

Released in November by Warner Brothers, and produced in conjunction with some of that glorious Canadian tax shelter money (you’re welcome, eh), Of Unknown Origin only made back a quarter of its $4 million budget. It didn’t wow the critics either, although Peter Weller (Robocop) was singled out for his wry performance as the put upon vermin victim.

Bart Hughes (Weller) has it all; the perfect wife (Shannon Tweed, in her feature film debut) and son, a high paying job, and a beautiful brownstone in New York. (Read: Montreal. Tax coin. Beauty.) Wife and child head off for a

New My Bloody Valentine (1981) Art Print from “Ghoulish” Gary Pullin Features the Film’s Fun Facts

  • DailyDead
With a creepy coal mine and a sadistic killer dwelling within its town limits, Valentine Bluffs is quite a dangerous place to live in George Mihalka's 1981 slasher film, My Bloody Valentine. To celebrate the film and the holiday it takes place on, renowned artist "Ghoulish"Gary Pullin has created a new art print that features fun facts about the film and highlights all the ways living in Valentine Bluffs can be hazardous to your health.

The new My Bloody Valentine art print (see below) will be released on February 14th at the Hammered Hearts Anti-Valentine Party at Club Absinthe in Hamilton, Ontario, where director Mihalka himself will be on hand to autograph the festive print.

My Bloody Valentine (1981) Midnights This Weekend at The Moolah

“Roses are red, violets are blue, one is dead, and so are you. “

My Bloody Valentine screens Midnights this weekend (February 10th and 11th) at The Moolah Theater and Lounge (3821 Lindell Blvd, St. Louis, Mo 63108) as part of Destroy the Brain’s monthly Late Night Grindhouse film series.

The original My Bloody Valentine, the most classic of ‘80s Canadian horrorshows, has it all: creative deaths, overt melodrama, boiled hearts, Moosehead beer and Coal Mining!

A small mining town in Canada has become famous over the years after a maniacal ex-miner went on a killing spree in the early sixties. He was the only survivor from a fatal accident on Valentine’s night that stole the lives of numerous workers and left him having to survive by feeding on the corpses of his colleagues. Harry Warden murdered the supervisors that he considered responsible for the tragedy and stuffed their hearts into

Fright Rags to Release My Bloody Valentine (1981) Apparel Collection

  • DailyDead
It’s that time of year for candy hearts, bouquets of roses, and, if you’re a fan of My Bloody Valentine, bloody pickaxes. The folks at Fright Rags certainly count themselves among the lattermost camp, and they’re paying tribute to the 1981 slasher film on February 8th with a new “Ballad of Harry Warden” apparel collection that would be right at home in Valentine Bluffs.

From Ben at Fright Rags: “Growing up, I was a fan of slasher movies more than any other of the various sub-genres of horror. If there was a deranged guy in a mask killing co-eds, I wanted to watch it. And goodness knows that the early 80s had their share of these films…

Of the many one off slashers (i.e. non-franchise flicks), My Bloody Valentine is probably my favorite. There’s something about it; perhaps the believable characters, interesting kills, or maybe the

Fantasia: Frontières showcases film and TV genre gems
Two hot TV projects, an environmental zombie and an unhinged park ranger were among highlights at the eighth edition of the horror market.

Frontières International Co-Production Market continued to showcase its growth at Fantasia International Film Festival as it kicked off its eighth edition on Thursday [July 21].

Earlier this year, the genre market announced a new partnership with the Marché du Film at Cannes, and the popularity of its pitching session at Fantasia meant that it moved to the festival’s bigger venue to accommodate the growing industry interest.

This edition’s 20 projects also saw the market’s remit expand to include two television projects for the first time.

House Of Psychotic Women from Rook Films, behind the likes of Ben Wheatley’s Sightseers and Peter Strickland’s The Duke Of Burgundy, is based on horror critic Kier-La Janisse’s acclaimed memoir.

Centred on 15-year-old Carly as she navigates Winnipeg’s child welfare system, each episode
