Storyline

Tormented by incessant and recurring nightmares of a hellish great white buffalo attacking him in the snow-clad wilderness, the ailing Wild Bill Hickok, decides to travel north to hunt down the raging mythical beast. Along the way, the experienced hunter will team up with an old friend, the one-eyed Charlie, while in the meantime, the Indian Chief Crazy Horse whose child was killed by the same creature, is already out in the unforgiving landscape, pursuing the extraordinary bison. Without a doubt, both men won't rest until they find the supernatural monster of legend, however, in this uncomfortable alliance, even the slightest mistake can prove deadly. Written by Nick Riganas

Thar it roams!

A western take on the Moby Dick legend. Occasionally a bit clumsy in plot and action, but nevertheless a fine western made in the years when really good wild west films were getting increasingly rare. There are some unforgettable sights like the huge mountain of buffalo bones next to a railway line.; a telling example of the exploits of white hunters and their civilization while conquering the wilderness. Some of the beautiful shots of snowy mountains and valleys brought to mind such great earlier westerns as Sergio Corbucci's 'The Great Silence' or Anthony Mann's 'The Far Country'.

The hunt for the white buffalo is seen both from an Indian's and a white man's side reaching to mythical levels. For them the final outcome of this hunt has its spiritual meaning which should somehow set them free from the past. Setting the story between real historical characters, Wild Bill Hickock and Crazy Horse, makes it even more fascinating. A good all-star cast even in the minor roles works well together throughout with Bronson and Samson leading. Of all of his strong silent type characters this role could be one of his best. Not a bad direction from Thompson.
