Storyline

Originally intended as a comedy vehicle for the star of series 1 + 2, James Beck, more famous as Private Walker in 'Dad's Army'. Bert Jones and his wife, Betty live on a caravan site in the midst of an economic crisis hit seventies Britain. Betty (Jo Rowbottom) has ideas above her station, including telling her mother she lives a life of luxury instead of squalor. Her mother is equally shocked by the living conditions her daughter is under. On her first visit, The Jones feed her their neighbour, Wally's pet chicken, Florey. The series follows the mishaps of the Jones' and their busybody neighbours, Wally and Lily Briggs, played by Arthur Mullard and Queenie Watts. The layabout families live side by side; the neighbour spats come fast and plenty. From series three, following Beck's untimely death, two new characters were brought in, Jeremy and Susan Crichton-Jones. Mullard and Watts went on to a spin-off, also created by the team that brought us 'On The Buses', called 'Yus, My Dear'.

what's funny about being disgusting with food?
27 December 2006 | by jaiboSee all my reviews

This was a very vulgar and mean spirited sitcom. It featured a young couple who move onto a caravan site and find themselves living next door to a horrible pair of old rogues, played to the hilt by Arthur Mullard and Queenie Watts. The humour, if you can call it that, consisted of Mullard and Watts being disgusting with food - dropping fag ash onto the bread as they buttered it, dropping sausages onto the floor, etc. - all to the disgust of their neighbours.

James Beck died early on on the run, and his place was taken by Jonathan Cecil playing a posh fellow who was forever calling Mullard "you silly arse!" which sent Mullard berserk with rage. Not the most sophisticated comedy in the world, then, but I can remember finding it a rib tickler when I was a little kid. The adults in my family found it perfectly disgusting.

It was followed by a sequel series, Yus My Dear, starring Watts and Mullard, who also feature as their Romany Jones characters in the film Holiday on the Buses.
