Fragmented Comedy
23 June 2017 | by GManfredSee all my reviews

Only 2 of 6 reels exist of this picture and consists of bits and pieces of 3 segments consisting of a total of 22 minutes. It was restored by the Czech equivalent of our Library of Congress and is mottled and has burn marks in spots.

What is here is very funny, hilarious in spots. It makes you wish you could see the whole film. Beery and Hatton play well off each other, as though they were a seasoned comedy team. It is WWI, and in one segment they find themselves on a target range, and they think the soldiers yelling at them are chasing them, instead of trying to warn them. Then later they are in a European circus and unwittingly hijack a hot air balloon. Louise Brooks appears briefly in the circus segment. The balloon takes them over enemy lines, with comic results. Then the film abruptly stops.

It was shown at the Mostly Lost Festival at the Library of Congress, 6/16/17.
