His great grandfather served in the First World War from 1914 to 1918 in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserves (R.N.V.R.) in the Infantry. He fought at Dardanelles where he was wounded. He was then posted to the Western Front in France. It was here that he won The Military Medal for bravery at Courcelette on 25 March 1918.
