Eva Green and Ed Skrein line up for politically charged sci-fi A Patriot

Eva Green and Ed Skrein are among the stars in place for sci-fi thriller A Patriot, which is set to depict an authoritarian state separated from a world in chaos due to climate change and scarce resources.

Deadline reports that Oscar winner Kathy Bates is also on board for the film, which is being directed by British filmmaker Dan Pringle (K-Shop), who also wrote the script with Toby Rushton. Rushton has experience in the sci-fi realm, having worked as a script editor on Gareth Edwards’s Monsters.

Currently in pre-production, the movie’s screenplay comes from Dan Pringle (K-Shop) and Toby Rushton (Monsters) with Pringle also attached to direct. Project is being produced by Adam Merrifield (K-Shop) from White Lantern Film and John Giwa-Amu (The Machine) from Red & Black Films with Angus Finney (The Mother) executive producing.

The script takes place in a future authoritarian state that has walled itself away from a world ravaged by climate chaos and resource wars. The story follows the unquestioning Border Corp Captain Kate Jones (Green) as she fights to defend the purity of the population, until a chance discovery makes her doubt the authorities she has pledge her allegiance and life to protect.

Queensland Government and Village Roadshow to build super stage

The Queensland Government has reached an in-principle agreement to build a 4000sqm super stage at Village Roadshow.s Oxenford Studios.

The partnership that will deliver the latest venue for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games and provide a major drawcard for international blockbuster films.

.Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the proposal would see the biggest and best super stage in Australia built at Village Roadshow.s Oxenford Studios and subsequently fitted out to host the GC2018 Squash competition.

She said the Queensland Government would contribute $11 million from the GC2018 venue construction program to build the super stage as an investment in the international competitiveness of the Queensland screen industry.

..The new super stage will position Queensland strongly against competitors interstate and overseas, growing the local industry, building local expertise and increasing employment opportunities,. she said.

Love Paunch: Hopkins’ Latest a Predictable Bore

Though its cast members seem to game for a good, silly romp, Joel Hopkins’ latest film, The Love Punch, sadly, is not such a treat. Reuniting with star Emma Thompson from his last outing, 2008’s Last Chance Harvey, this discordant rom-com caper has all the charm of a lobotomized poodle; fluffy and without all the necessary faculties to function. To use the phrase ‘by-the-numbers’ would be a generous euphemism for when their charm can’t seem to pick up the slack, the addlepated antics being performed by such talented performers is often off-putting. It’s a film of the ilk that people make comments such as, “Oh wasn’t it great to see so and so in a lead performance?”
