‘Descendants 3’ Draws 8.3M Total Viewers In L+3 For Disney Channel; Cable’s Top Program Since First Sequel In Some Young Demos

Disney Channel’s premiere of the musical Descendants 3 drew 8.4 million total viewers in Live+3 ratings to rank as the top show across all of television on Friday night. It also was cable’s highest-rated program since 2017’s Descendants 2 in several key young demos.

The threequel — which was dedicated to the memory of its star Cameron Boyce, who died last month — ranked No. 1 on Saturday in every demo Disney Channel tracks. Per Nielsen, it was the top-rated telecast on all of cable in two years among kids 6-11, tweens 9-14, girls 6-11 and girls 9-14.

In July 2017, Descendants 2 premiered to 8.6 million total viewers for Disney Channel and 21 million across six Disney-owned networks including ABC in L+3. The original Descendants did even better for its July 2015 bow. All three pics in the franchise soared in L+3 over Live+same day.

In a sit-down interview with Good Morning America - their first one since Cameron died from an epileptic seizure at age 20 on July 6 - the stars open up about Cameron's bright attitude and how they've been dealing with the loss.

"Cameron - even when he was around - is the hardest person to put into words, you know?" Dove said, fighting back tears. She went on to say that the last conversation they had was just like any other. "It was pretty normal. We all expected to see each other a lot more - for a lot more," she said. "We had a lot of press coming up that we were meant to be doing, and we always do it together."

Cameron Boyce, Star of Disney’s ‘Descendants,’ Dies at 20
Cameron Boyce, an actor best known for his roles in the Disney Channel series “Jessie” and the “Descendants” TV movie franchise, has died at age 20.

“He passed away in his sleep due to a seizure which was a result of an ongoing medical condition for which he was being treated,” a Boyce family spokesperson told ABC News on Saturday night. “The world is now undoubtedly without one of its brightest lights, but his spirit will live on through the kindness and compassion of all who knew and loved him.”

The exact cause of death has not been disclosed.

At age 9, the freckle-faced Los Angeles native his acting debut in the 2008 horror film “Mirrors” and then appeared in the 2010 blockbuster comedy “Grown Ups” as one of the sons of Adam Sandler’s character.

Twilight” star Booboo Stewart will join Kevin Costner and Diane Lane in the Focus Features suspense thriller “Let Him Go,” based on Larry Watson’s novel of the same name.

Lesley Manville, Jeffrey Donovan, Kayli Carter and Will Brittain are also on board. “The Family Stone” filmmaker Thomas Bezucha is set to direct from his own screenplay. Paula Mazur and Mitchell Kaplan of the Mazur Kaplan Company will produce alongside Bezucha. Costner will executive produce with Kimi Armstrong Stein, Jeffrey Lampert and Rod Lake.

Production of “Let Him Go” is expected to start in the spring.
