‘Mulan’ Official Trailer: Niki Caro’s Grand Feminist Vision of the Disney Classic

Disney has released the first official trailer for its upcoming live action remake of “Mulan,” the 1998 animated classic about a young woman who goes undercover as a man in order to take her father’s place in the Imperial Army. The original was a surprise box office success for Disney in the late ’90s, following the relatively disappointing box-office of “Hercules” and “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.” Following in the footsteps of recent live-action remakes like Jon Favreau’s “The Lion King” and “The Jungle Book,” “Mulan” was directed by New Zealand-based filmmaker Niki Caro, who will bring her fresh vision of the feminist tale to the big screen. The newly released first official trailer promises plenty of epic battles, gorgeous cinematography, and a contemporary bent on the crossdressing tale.

Set in China during the Han dynasty, “Mulan” has recently been reclaimed as a transgender narrative. The titular character is

Kathy Bates going lead for Richard Jewell!

Shortly after updating the Best Supporting Actress chart and placing Kathy Bates in the mix for Richard Jewell, one of our SAG Nominating Committee friends sent us this image.  Surprise. Kathy Bates is campaigning as a lead at SAG.

Longtime awards obsessives will already know this but for newbies to the intricacies of awards season you should know that SAG voters do not have a choice where they place actors. They can only vote on them in the categories for which they've officially been submitted by the studios (same with Emmy voters). Occassionally SAG and Oscar campaign tactics are different, studios changed their mind, or errors are made by administrative types so people nominated in lead at SAG occassionally go on to win supporting acting Oscars (Benicio del Toro in Traffic / Jennifer Connelly in A Beautiful Mind) or go from being a supporting nominee at SAG to a leading player

‘Jojo Rabbit’ is a strong Oscar contender in 11 categories

‘Jojo Rabbit’ is a strong Oscar contender in 11 categories
Fresh from its People’s Choice Award win at the Toronto Film Festival, Taika Waititi’s “Jojo Rabbit” received a rapturous reception at the London Film Festival. This Fox Searchlight release will unspool stateside on October 18 and is poised to be a major contender this Oscar season.

Waititi adapted Christine Leunens novel “Caging Skies.” He boldly added a layer of humor to her serious-minded story about a young boy (Roman Griffin Davis) in Nazi Germany who has Adolf Hitler as an imaginary friend. His script blends comedy and drama and is certain to figure in the Adapted Screenplay race at the Academy Awards. Waititi, who also directed, pulls triple duty by playing Hitler as well. His edgy portrayal of the dictator as a complete moron was a stand-out and could well reap him a third nomination. Indeed, you wish there were more scenes with him.

‘Tone-Deaf’ Review: Millennials and Baby Boomers Go to Head-to-Head

The kids just aren’t the same anymore and it’s slowly making Harvey (Robert Patrick) go insane. His son (Ronnie Gene Blevins’ David) thinks it’s dementia and wants to put him in an assisted living institute, but that’s merely another example of America’s youth forgetting their responsibilities. In his day family took care of itself. When Harvey’s wife died, he did everything to give his son a good life. And this is his reward? Abandonment? He’s sacrificed blood, sweat, tears, and time and now he’s done watching the world devolve around him as though it was all for naught. If Harvey’s to be dismissed by society as a dinosaur longing for a past where “men were men and women knew it,” he’s going to go out banging that drum.

That leads us to Olive (Amanda Crew)—one of those Millennials that

Alana de la Garza Moves From ‘FBI: Most Wanted’ To ‘FBI’, Will Continue To Recur On Spinoff Series For CBS
Exclusive: Alana de la Garza, co-star of CBS’ upcoming midseason drama FBI: Most Wanted, is joining the mothership, FBI, as a series regular, reprising her role as Assistant Special Agent in Charge Isobel Castile. She also will continue to play the character on offshoot FBI: Most Wanted as a recurring guest star.

On FBI, which returns for a second season in the fall, de la Garza will fill the void left by the departure of Sela Ward, who had a one-year deal for the series. Ward played Special Agent in Charge Dana Mosier, who submitted her resignation in the Season 1 finale. Given Isobel’s Asac title on FBI: Most Wanted, she should be able to fit in nicely, taking over the boss position vacated by Sac Dana Mosier on FBI.

The move underscores the cohesiveness of the TV universes Dick Wolf builds with his procedural franchises, like NBC’s “One Chicago,

Tone-Deaf Trailer Turns Robert Patrick Into a Manic Millennial Murderer

Tone-Deaf Trailer Turns Robert Patrick Into a Manic Millennial Murderer
Tone-Deaf stars Robert Patrick as an eccentric widower who sets out to slaughter a Millennial in gleefully dark and hilarious fashion. The movie debuted at SXSW earlier this year to mixed reactions. Though that is to be expected when the target of the humor are the ones enjoying SXSW and aren't necessarily cool with being ridiculed or being made fun of. Just look at the critical reactions to the new Shaft movie on Rotten Tomatoes.

Robert Patrick leads an ensemble cast in Tone-Deaf, going opposite Amanda Crew as the millennial on the receiving end of a Tomahawk. Though, she's not down with being killed in such a culturally appropriated way. Joining them are Hayley Marie Norman, Johnny Pemberton, Nancy Linehan Charles, AnnaLynne McCord, Keisha Castle-Hughes, with Ray Wise and Kim Delaney.

Harvey has lived a good life. He's done it all except for one thing. He doesn't know how it feels to kill someone.

Generations Collide in the Trailer for Richard Bates Jr.’s Tone-deaf

In her SXSW review of Tone-Deaf, Heather Wixson wrote that Richard Bates Jr. "explores the ongoing war between baby boomers and millennials," and following their acquisition of North American rights to Tone-Deaf back in March, Saban Films has now released the movie's first trailer that's filled with violent impulses, pitch-black humor, and a deadly generational divide.

Tone-Deaf is slated for a theatrical release in the Us on August 23rd. Written and directed by Bates Jr., Tone-Deaf stars Robert Patrick, Amanda Crew, Hayley Marie Norman, Johnny Pemberton, Nancy Linehan Charles, AnnaLynne McCord, Keisha Castle-Hughes, Ray Wise, and Kim Delaney.

You can check out the official trailer and poster below, and in case you missed it, read Heather Wixson's SXSW interview with Bates Jr, Patrick, and Crew.
