Sales agents warn distributors “need to pre-buy” to compete with SVoD platforms

  • ScreenDaily
A discussion on the sales industry took place at the BFI London Film Festival.

Independent distributors increasingly need to pre-buy films or risk losing out to streaming platforms, according to top international sales agents.

“Platforms are coming on board earlier. This is waking up some distributors that they need to pre-buy to compete,” said Carole Baraton, co-founder of French sales company Charades.

“Specifically, in the Us, independent distributors used to be comfortable enough to not have to pre-buy. They realise now they have to come on board earlier if they don’t want all the exciting films to be swept

Amazon Studios Faces a ‘Late Night’ Disaster, Bob Berney’s Exit, and Bidding-War Realities

Amazon Studios Faces a ‘Late Night’ Disaster, Bob Berney’s Exit, and Bidding-War Realities
This week, Amazon Studios became a standard-bearer for the issue impacting every specialized distributor: Exactly how is it supposed to get people to watch their movies?

Exhibit A is the failure of “Late Night,” for which Amazon paid $13 million in North American rights. With 2,200 screens in its second week, the well-reviewed “Late Night” saw a per-screen average of $2,367, and will likely end its run at or near $20 million.

Exhibit B is the exit of Bob Berney, head of Amazon Studios’ marketing and distribution. He decided that when his four-year contract expired on June 15, it was the right time to leave. “I fulfilled my deal and we did some great stuff,” he told IndieWire. “I am proud of the team. I want to move on. I’ve done everything I think I can do there.”

Already, Salke is making moves to right the ship. Although Amazon launched declaring its intent to honor traditional theatrical windows,

Sardinia Film Festival Aims to Boost Summer Cinema Attendance in Italy

Sardinia Film Festival Aims to Boost Summer Cinema Attendance in Italy
For decades, Italy’s box office has suffered the summertime blues due to a scarcity of blockbusters from the Hollywood studios, which noted that Italian audiences were more interested in going to the beach than a movie theater. However, that is changing.

The Filming Italy Sardegna Festival, which runs June 13-16 and is Italy’s single start of summer event, is perfectly positioned to become a prime driver for this crucial seasonal push.

“I’ve been saying for years that summer festivals should promote summer releases,” says Tiziana Rocca, who launched the fest on the island of Sardinia in Italy last year.

Italy’s push for summer releases is the result of a joint effort between the studios and all sectors of Italy’s film industry, largely prompted by the government that recently got all sides to sit at the table and agree to remove this anomaly that was causing

‘Beautiful Boy’ Review

  • Nerdly
Stars: Steve Carell, Maura Tierney, Jack Dylan Grazer, Oakley Bull, Christian Convery, Timothée Chalamet, Amy Aquino, Carlton Wilborn, Stefanie Scott, Marypat Farrell, Timoth Hutton, Amy Forsyth | Written by Felix van Groeningen, Luke Davies | Directed by Felix van Groeningen

Beautiful Boy, directed by Felix van Groeningen, faces stiff competition as the Armageddon to Peter Hedges’ Ben is Back, the equivalent to that of Deep Impact. A nonsensical and truly incomparable comparison, but undoubtedly the two have some similarities, and with having seen Hedges Ben is Back and now Groeningen’s film, it is undoubtedly clear that one of these films has won this none-existing war by a mile. As Beautiful Boy is a heart-breaking, sombre and brutal feature that puts you through every pain imaginable watching this tragic story unfold.

There is a lot to appreciate here, specifically the performances. Film Twitter darling Timothee Chalamet is breath-taking in his role as addict Nic Sheff.

‘Ben is Back’ Review

  • Nerdly
Stars: Julia Roberts, Lucas Hedges, Courtney B. Vance, Kathryn Newton, Rachel Bay Jones, David Zaldivar, Alexandra Park, Michael Esper, Tim Guinee, Myra Lucretia Taylor, Kristin Griffith, Jack Davidson, Mia Fowler, Jakari Fraser, Cameron Roberts | Written and Directed by Peter Hedges

Ben is Back, directed by Peter Hedges, faces strong competition in this year’s “Armageddon vs Deep Impact” cinematic war/rivalry against Felix van Groeningen’s Beautiful Boy. Two incredibly alike films that follow a parent and drug-addicted son relationship in the emotionally tormenting journey that both travel on. Peter Hedges film stands firmly on its own ground with a semi-captivating drama that hits with a suffocating gut punch of emotionally draining brutality but gets lost on the path it travels with excessively dramatic plot elements that are executed more in the realm of the absurd than captivating.

The unnecessary plot elements, while not destructive to the films overall narrative or resonance of emotional depth,

Ben Is Back Review

  • HeyUGuys
Julia Roberts gives a truly outstanding performance in Peter Hedges’s poignant new family drama Ben Is Back. Written and directed by Hedges, the film also stars the director’s son and current Hollywood favourite Lucas Hedges in this inspired, if slightly uneven, tale about a family’s struggle to cope with their teenage son’s addiction and unsteady recovery.

It’s the day before Christmas and Holly Burns (Roberts) is shocked beyond words when she pulls into her driveway to find her teenage son Ben waiting outside the family house. Ben, you see, has been in a rehab facility for the last couple of months and swears to have seventy-seven days of clean living. For his sister Ivy (Kathryn Newton) and stepdad Neal (Courtney B. Vance), the family has been here before and witnessed the young man’s manipulation first hand, which doesn’t stop Holly from welcoming the young man with open arms,
