(Summer 1973) Betty Comden, Adolphe Green and his musical, "Applause," was performed in a Kenley Players production at the Packard Music Hall Theatre in Warren; the Veterans Memorial Theatre in Columbus and Memorial Hall in Dayton, Ohio with Alexis Smith in the cast. John Kenley was artistic director.

, had heard one of Strouse's "Green Mansions" songs. Padula needed a composer for an idea he had for a musical about teenagers. It became "Bye Bye Birdie". Strouse not only composed the music, he played piano for the auditions.
