How Hallmark Built a ‘Brand Experience’ Around ‘Countdown to Christmas’

  • Variety
A decade into Hallmark’s “Countdown to Christmas” initiative, the demand for original programming is higher than ever, with more holiday-themed projects across platforms. But for Hallmark, the only true competition comes from within.

“We push ourselves every year to do even more — and ‘more’ may not mean volume, but to make high-quality stories, to learn from what we’ve done really well in the past, and see what we can build on, to engage talent we haven’t worked with before and at the same time create the family of talent that we work with,” says Michelle Vicary, executive vice president, programming and network publicity, Crown Media Family Networks.

Hallmark’s first holiday film was released in 2002, but its “Countdown to Christmas” lineup began in earnest in 2010. This year there are 40 original movies — a record number — and the first one made its debut before Halloween. Airing on the Hallmark Channel

General Hospital's Ryan Paevey Stars in 'Christmas at the Plaza'

Fans of Ryan Paevey were upset when he left the role of General Hospital's Nathan, but thankfully, the actor has been working consistently since then so he's rarely gone from TV screens for very long! Paevey's newest project is Christmas at the Plaza, scheduled to air on Friday, Nov. 29, on the Hallmark Channel. Hallmark hasn't released any further information about the plot, but his co-star is Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. star Elizabeth Henstridge, and the IMDb says they'll be playing the characters of Nick and Jessica, who we would hazard a guess will find romance at the Plaza Hotel during Christmas time! Christmas at the Plaza is written and directed by Ron Oliver, who has helmed many other Hallmark productions, including holiday-themed ones. Paevey shared some photos from New York City including one of the grand entrance to the Plaza Hotel, so it would seem that

Interview: Beethoven's Treasure Tail is a Rib-Tickler...and for star Jonathan Silverman, a Rib Cracker!

If you're looking for a movie that you and the rest of your family can enjoy on a chill night at home, where better to look than the tried and true adventures of Beethoven, the giant St. Bernard?

Beethoven's Treasure Tail is the latest movie in the series to head to home video. We got to ask star Jonathan Silverman a few questions, and see what's happened since we last saw Beethoven.

Fanlala: What has changed for Eddie since Beethoven's Big Break?

Jonathan Silverman: A lot has changed for Eddie since we last saw him in Beethoven's Big Break. His son is now off to college, so as a single dad it's just him and his beloved and trusted dog Beethoven. Nonetheless, his status as a dog trainer has increased and Eddie and Beethoven are making lots of successful movies together.

However, something isn't quite right with Beethoven on

‘Modern Family’s’ Jesse Tyler Ferguson gets his singing on

By Greg Hernandez

HollywoodNews.com: Good afternoon all.

I’ve been busy at the TV Critics Association Winter Press Tour all day so blogging has been a bit slow.

Luke Perry and Jason Priestley were just here chatting up a western they made for Hallmark called ‘Goodnight for Justice.’

Earlier today, Billy Campbell of ‘Once and Again’ and ‘Tales of the City’ fame was promoting the AMC series ‘The Killing’ and Kellie Martin, who we all loved in ‘Life Goes On,’ ‘Christy’ and ‘ER,’ was part of a panel for the Hallmark movie ‘Smooch’ directed by the talented Ron Oliver.

Still to come this afternoon are the stars of ‘Spartacus: Gods of the Arena,’ ‘Torchwood: The Real World’ and ‘Camelot’ (including Joseph Fiennes!). Here to talk about the HBO movie ‘Cinema Verite’ will be Diane Lane, Tim Robbins and James Gandolfini.

Saturday Nightmares: Hello Mary Lou - Prom Night II (1987)

1980’s Prom Night was among the first slasher films to come bursting forth from the post-Halloween floodgates and, while it doesn’t seem like you can find a positive review of it anymore, it was a big success then and remains one of the most enjoyable entries in the slasher subgenre.

When producer Peter R. Simpson finally decided to create a follow-up, however, A Nightmare on Elm Street and its first sequel had done far better box office business than their straight-up slasher peers. It’s no surprise, then, that the filmmakers took note of Freddy Krueger’s increasing popularity and decided to take things in a similar, supernatural direction. What we have here is an attempt to create the next popular nightmare man (or woman). Hence, Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II.

Shifting gears with a sequel seems like an incredibly strange practice. On one hand it seems like

Have a question about gay male entertainment? Send it to aftereltonflyingmonkey@yahoo.com! (Please include your city and state and/or country.)

Q: Am I wrong or does the latest episode of Nip/Tuck send a very negative representation of the gay community, and the idea of gay marriage and adoption? – Dan, Rochester NY

A: A negative representation of the gay community just because they do an episode about an adoptive boy who gets plastic surgery so he’ll look more like his father so it’ll be more of a turn-on for the crowds of rich gay men who watch them perform in their live incest sex show?

Nip/Tuck's disturbing chip off the old block

Well, okay, but that’s just one gay storyline of this season, right? It’s not like they also did an explicit storyline about brutal prison rape, or one where a wildly promiscuous

movieScope 2:5

The eleventh issue of movieScope is on the stands. Online, readers can access an abbreviated edit of my conversation with Arnaud Desplechin (ah, wordcount!), as well as Adam Thursby‘s profile of actor Stephen Rea. Liz Hobbs writes up the Old Vic Theatre and explores the collaboration between stage and screen.

A portion of the cover feature on Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler is available by way of editor Eric Lilleør’s introductory editorial. At the “Fading In” sidebar Andy Conway wryly riffs on “Fundophobia, Draftophilia and the Addp.”

In the Insiders P.O.V. sidebar of the print issue, Mick Southworth & Martin McCabe reminisce on the bygone era of movie poster art in their essay “Coming Soon: The Art of the Quad.” Director Ron Oliver offers tips on directing children in his piece “Alligators Have the Right Idea.” Rick Drew recruits Seth Lochhead as a case study of what
