America was in the middle of its Me Decade, with an exhausting war and general upheaval at home. The weekly dramas of a farmer and his children—based on the Little House on the Prairie books by Laura Ingalls Wilder—were an irresistible look at a simpler time when people based their lives around family, home, and church. Melissa Gilbert: 'Little House on the Prairie' star always has room for Half-Pint

"It's extraordinary," Gilbert tells Zap2it. "I am still very aware of the impact the show has. I was on tour with the musical version for a year, and being on the ground, I got a feel for what both the book and the TV show 'Little House on the Prairie' meant to people.

"It's still one of the only shows available that an entire family
