Inside Madam Secretary's Final Season Creative Revamp: 'It Was Like Launching a New Series,' Ep Says

During her time as Secretary of State, Madam Secretary‘s Elizabeth McCord fearlessly has brokered peace, de-escalated wars and advanced human rights causes around the world. But on a sticky night in late August, a bit of horsehide and some red stitching had the former diplomat on edge.

The nerves stemmed from the fact that the (fictional) Elizabeth, played by the (real) Téa Leoni, was set to throw the first pitch at the (real) Indians vs. Mets game at New York’s Citi Field… as American presidents have been known to do.

‘Madam Secretary’s Erich Bergen Signs With Industry Entertainment
Exclusive: Erich Bergen, who co-stars opposite Téa Leoni on CBSMadam Secretary, has signed with Industry Entertainment for management.

Bergen has portrayed Blake Moran on Madam Secretary since the launch of the CBS series, which premieres its sixth and final season this fall.

Bergen received praise for his portrayal of legendary Bob Gaudio in the Warner Brothers feature Jersey Boys, directed by Clint Eastwood and produced by Graham King, and was previously seen co-starring in the independent feature Humor Me alongside Jemaine Clement and Elliott Gould.

In addition, Bergen was recently seen on Broadway in the leading male role of Dr. Pomatter in Waitress, opposite both Katherine McPhee and Shoshana Bean.

When Madam Secretary returns for its abbreviated sixth and final season on CBS, it will be without Sara Ramirez, who will not be returning as a series regular, Deadline has confirmed. Ramirez, who plays political strategist Kat Sandoval, may return for a guest appearance, according to TVLine, which first reported the casting news. Ramirez has been with the political drama series since season four.

Ramirez joined the series following the sudden departure of Bebe Neuwirth who played Nadine Tolliver. Ramirez’s Kat Sandoval is legendary in D.C. for her talent and for abruptly dropping out of politics until Elizabeth (Téa Leoni) managed to coax her back into the State Department.

Madam Secretary was Ramirez’s first series regular TV role since her departure from ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy, where she appeared for over a decade as Dr. Callie Torres. Her previous credits include voice roles on Disney Jr.

Madam Secretary will end with its forthcoming sixth season. CBS revealed Wednesday that it will finish the Téa Leoni-fronted show with a 10-episode order this year.

Created by Barbara Hall, Madam Secretary stars Leoni as Elizabeth McCord, the shrewd, determined U.S. Secretary of State who drives international diplomacy and circumvents protocol as she negotiates global and domestic issues, both at the White House and at home.

CBS Entertainment president Kelly Kahl revealed the news at the network’s upfronts press breakfast. “They’re going to do 10 episodes in the fall and tie up the storyline. We’re happy and excited to do that for Téa, the cast and the audience. CBS Renews Six Dramas, Including ‘Hawaii Five-0,’ ‘Bull,’ ‘Swat’

CBS has renewed a slew of six drama series and two news programs for the 2019-20 television season.

The returning dramas include “Bull,” “Hawaii Five-0,” “Madam Secretary,” “MacGyver,” “Seal Team” and “Swat,” while the news programs are “48 Hours” and “60 Minutes.”

“Bull” will be back for Season 4; “Hawaii Five-0” returns for Season 10; “Madam Secretary” returns for Season 6; “MacGyver” will return for Season 4; and both “Seal Team” and “Swat” are returning for their third seasons.

‘Madam Secretary’ Renewed For Season 6 By CBS

CBS has renewed Madam Secretary for a sixth season. That would be great news for fans of the show, who had been vocal in their support as the political drama found itself heavily on the bubble for the first time. Madam Secretary recently topped USA Today’ annual Save Our Shows poll.

The network today also renewed Seal Team, S.W.A.T., Bull, Hawaii-Five-o and MacGyver, and magazine shows 60 Minutes and 48 Hours, bringing the total number of series renewed for next year to 18.
