1. Dragon Ball (1995–2003)

TV-14 | 24 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

Dragon Ball tells the tale of a young warrior by the name of Son Goku, a young peculiar boy with a tail who embarks on a quest to become stronger and learns of the Dragon Balls, when, once all 7 are gathered, grant any wish of choice.

Stars: Brice Armstrong, Steve Olson, Stephanie Nadolny, Zoe Slusar

The start of my all-time favourite anime franchise, I consider it a classic in terms of comedy and action.

Despite them being part of the same run of manga, if I had to choose, I would say I prefer this ever so slightly over its successor, Dragon Ball Z. I find the fight scenes are more creative, with more emphasis on martial arts, and the humour (which is far more present here) adds a lot.

Son Goku is such a great lead (I have an entire shelf of action figures dedicated to him... and a bookshelf full of various other characters), with his mixture of strength and naivete, he's a complete joy to watch.

Over 153 episodes we see a gradual transformation from a gag manga to an immortal action/comedy filled with some of the most memorable characters around.

2. Dragon Ball Z (1989–1996)

TV-PG | 24 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

The adventures of Earth's martial arts defender Son Goku continue with a new family and the revelation of his alien origin. Now Goku and his allies must defend the planet from an onslaught of new extraterrestrial enemies.

3. Dragon Ball GT (1996–2002)

TV-PG | 24 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

After Goku is made a kid again by the Black Star Dragon Balls, he goes on a journey to get back to his old self.

Stars: Elise Baughman, Andrew Chandler, Masako Nozawa, Yûko Minaguchi

Here's where the Dragon Ball franchise loses its way. With the manga having ended, Toei decides to keep things going on their own.

I would have been fine with this decision, being able to enjoy it as a fun "what-if" addition to the series.... the problem is that for every thing that works in the series, there are several that don't. There is zero consistency in characters' strength, memorable villains are reduced to jokes and basically no characters other than Goku and his granddaughter (the tough to like) Pan get a chance to shine.

But there are things I like about the series, despite how sloppily these aspects were handled. Super Saiyan 4 is a pretty awesome concept and design, and the idea of having the Dragon Balls themselves as the final villains is nothing short of brilliant.

Basically, I don't hate GT. I'm not sure I can say I like it, but I find it watchable.

4. Trigun (1998)

TV-14 | 24 min | Animation, Action, Comedy

Vash the Stampede is the most infamous outlaw on the planet Gunsmoke and with a 60 billion double dollar price on his head the most sought after!

Stars: Masaya Onosaka, Hiromi Tsuru, Satsuki Yukino, Johnny Yong Bosch

Votes: 18,325

I adore Trigun. I would actually say Trigun is one of the few anime adaptations I prefer over the manga that inspired it. After a while, the manga went a little crazy, with huge space battles, and heavy science-fiction overload.

While science fiction plays a large role in the anime, it is first and foremost a story of a gunslinger with a strong moral compass. It has amazing action sequences and memorable characters, some good, some not-so-good.

And basically, you'd be hard pressed to find a more likeable lead than Vash, who plays a completely hilarious goofball at times, but hides a much more serious side.

I'm actually not as crazy about this show as most people are. That's not to say it isn't great, it just didn't blow me away. It's plain to see why most love it, though. It's got great characters and a great aesthetic.

I think it may have done more for me if it were a little more plot driven. I may appreciate it more someday, but for now, it's a great show that wouldn't quite make my list of favourites.

Interestingly enough though, I rewatched the film recently.... and that probably WOULD be on my list of favourite anime films. I think I loved it more than any episode of the series.
