The Gem State is the official nickname of Idaho. This nickname is for the abundance of natural resources and scenic areas that include snow-capped mountain ranges, rapids, vast lakes and steep canyons (source: statesymbolsusa.org). Idaho became the 43rd state of the United States of America in 1890.
