1. Phantasm (1979)

A teenage boy and his friends face off against a mysterious grave robber known only as the Tall Man, who keeps a lethal arsenal of terrible weapons with him.
Votes: 30,024 | Gross: $11.99M
I have seen this movie so many times (as well as all the sequels) and have introduced it to so many people, you'd think I'd have realized it's not as great as I first thought it was. But, on the contrary, every time I watch this mind-bending rubber-reality film from Don Coscarelli, I swear it's like experiencing it for the first time. The most criminally underwatched horror movie of the 1970's is never dull and sets up a universe of infinite possibilities that keeps you on the edge of your seat. And to top that all off, it's got an excellent ensemble cast of characters who just closed out this iconic Phranchise with Phantasm: Ravager. Get on it, people!
2. Alien (1979)
R | 117 min | Horror, Sci-Fi
After a space merchant vessel receives an unknown transmission as a distress call, one of the crew is attacked by a mysterious life form and they soon realize that its life cycle has merely begun.
Votes: 748,139 | Gross: $78.90M
Sci Fi horror at its finest. This movie is immensely more well-crafted than the run-of-the-mill blockbuster that Cameron cooked up as a sequel. Ridley Scott's subtleties combined with his visual direction and H.R. Giger's amazing creature design come together in the best alien movie of all time. Ripley is a timeless and fantastic heroin whose story is best told in this original entry of the series.
3. Halloween (1978)
R | 91 min | Horror, Thriller
Fifteen years after murdering his sister on Halloween night 1963, Michael Myers escapes from a mental hospital and returns to the small town of Haddonfield, Illinois to kill again.
Votes: 217,230 | Gross: $47.00M
Michael Meyers is my #1 iconic slasher villain. Just the image of the shape made me go crazy as a kid. Didn't actually watch the original until much later, and studying it in film school made me love it more than I ever did before.
4. The Descent (2005)
R | 99 min | Adventure, Horror, Thriller
A caving expedition goes horribly wrong, as the explorers become trapped and ultimately pursued by a strange breed of predators.
Votes: 192,185 | Gross: $26.02M
No movie has scared me more than this one. That alone secures it a spot inside my top 5!
5. Creepshow (1982)
R | 120 min | Comedy, Fantasy, Horror
An anthology which tells five terrifying tales based on the E.C. horror comic books of the 1950s.
Votes: 39,959 | Gross: $21.03M
Fun, innovative, creepy, and genre-bending. I love every part of this movie, and it's just as fun every time.
6. Scream (1996)
R | 111 min | Horror, Mystery
A year after the murder of her mother, a teenage girl is terrorized by a new killer, who targets the girl and her friends by using horror films as part of a deadly game.
Votes: 272,529 | Gross: $103.05M
One of my childhood-defining movies. I think I actually saw part 3 first, but after revisiting the series I can't believe this movie is so good. It's the definition of an instant classic.
7. Hellraiser (1987)
R | 94 min | Horror, Thriller
An unfaithful wife encounters the zombie of her dead lover; the demonic cenobites are pursuing him after he escaped their sadomasochistic underworld.
Votes: 97,312 | Gross: $14.56M
A movie that I like more every time I see it. It's bizarre, it's disgusting, it's taboo-breaking, it's multi-layered. It's awesome.
8. The Exorcist (1973)
R | 122 min | Horror
When a 12 year-old girl is possessed by a mysterious entity, her mother seeks the help of two priests to save her.
Votes: 347,314 | Gross: $232.91M
Possibly the scariest movie of all time. But I never want to watch it again, so it can't be too high on my list.
9. Videodrome (1983)
R | 87 min | Horror, Sci-Fi, Thriller
When he acquires a different kind of show for his station, a sleazy cable-TV programmer begins to see his life and the future of media spin out of control in a terrifying new reality.
Votes: 78,840 | Gross: $2.12M
Wow. So weird. So disturbing. So relevant to our culture. One of the most underrated movies near the top of my list!
10. The Conjuring (2013)
R | 112 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller
Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren work to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in their farmhouse.
Votes: 419,440 | Gross: $137.40M
The quintessential supernatural horror film since the beginning of the 2000's.
11. The Burning (1981)
R | 91 min | Horror
A former summer camp caretaker, horribly burned from a prank gone wrong, lurks around an upstate New York summer camp bent on killing the teenagers responsible for his disfigurement.
I know it's a F13 ripoff, but I like this one better. It's got some of the most iconic slasher scenes in my opinion.
12. Creepshow 2 (1987)
R | 92 min | Comedy, Fantasy, Horror
Three more bone-chilling tales that include a vengeful wooden Native American, a monstrous blob in a lake, and a hitchhiker who wants revenge and will not die.
Votes: 21,139 | Gross: $14.00M
The Chief Wood'nhead and The Raft sequences are absolute classics I can watch anytime.
13. Friday the 13th (1980)
R | 95 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller
A group of camp counselors are stalked and murdered by an unknown assailant while trying to reopen a summer camp where, years before, it was the site of a child's drowning and a grisly double murder.
Votes: 112,118 | Gross: $39.75M
Not technically the best movie, but I'll still always love it for creating Jason Voorhees, and having a great twist that viewers today STILL frequently don't expect.
14. Sleepy Hollow (1999)
R | 105 min | Fantasy, Horror, Mystery
Ichabod Crane is sent to Sleepy Hollow to investigate the decapitations of three people, with the culprit being the legendary apparition, The Headless Horseman.
Votes: 316,495 | Gross: $101.07M
First R-Rated horror I ever saw @ 6 years old. Will stick with me forever!
15. Jaws (1975)

Votes: 128,347 | Gross: $30.86M
The most raw and brutal 70's slasher. I was late to the game on seeing this one, but it's an instant favorite.
18. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)

Votes: 39,326 | Gross: $1.17M
Surprising if slightly overhyped, I was fortunate enough to catch a theatrical showing of this excellent slow burn thriller. Watch it with as little knowledge as possible going in.
