1. Phantasm (1979)

R | 89 min | Horror, Sci-Fi

72 Metascore

A teenage boy and his friends face off against a mysterious grave robber known only as the Tall Man, who keeps a lethal arsenal of terrible weapons with him.

Director: Don Coscarelli | Stars: A. Michael Baldwin, Bill Thornbury, Reggie Bannister, Kathy Lester

Votes: 30,024 | Gross: $11.99M

I have seen this movie so many times (as well as all the sequels) and have introduced it to so many people, you'd think I'd have realized it's not as great as I first thought it was. But, on the contrary, every time I watch this mind-bending rubber-reality film from Don Coscarelli, I swear it's like experiencing it for the first time. The most criminally underwatched horror movie of the 1970's is never dull and sets up a universe of infinite possibilities that keeps you on the edge of your seat. And to top that all off, it's got an excellent ensemble cast of characters who just closed out this iconic Phranchise with Phantasm: Ravager. Get on it, people!

2. Alien (1979)

R | 117 min | Horror, Sci-Fi

89 Metascore

After a space merchant vessel receives an unknown transmission as a distress call, one of the crew is attacked by a mysterious life form and they soon realize that its life cycle has merely begun.

Director: Ridley Scott | Stars: Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, John Hurt, Veronica Cartwright

Votes: 748,139 | Gross: $78.90M

Sci Fi horror at its finest. This movie is immensely more well-crafted than the run-of-the-mill blockbuster that Cameron cooked up as a sequel. Ridley Scott's subtleties combined with his visual direction and H.R. Giger's amazing creature design come together in the best alien movie of all time. Ripley is a timeless and fantastic heroin whose story is best told in this original entry of the series.

3. Halloween (1978)

R | 91 min | Horror, Thriller

81 Metascore

Fifteen years after murdering his sister on Halloween night 1963, Michael Myers escapes from a mental hospital and returns to the small town of Haddonfield, Illinois to kill again.

Director: John Carpenter | Stars: Donald Pleasence, Jamie Lee Curtis, Tony Moran, Nancy Kyes

Votes: 217,230 | Gross: $47.00M

Michael Meyers is my #1 iconic slasher villain. Just the image of the shape made me go crazy as a kid. Didn't actually watch the original until much later, and studying it in film school made me love it more than I ever did before.

4. The Descent (2005)

71 Metascore

5. Creepshow (1982)

Votes: 272,529 | Gross: $103.05M

One of my childhood-defining movies. I think I actually saw part 3 first, but after revisiting the series I can't believe this movie is so good. It's the definition of an instant classic.

7. Hellraiser (1987)

57 Metascore

Votes: 347,314 | Gross: $232.91M

Possibly the scariest movie of all time. But I never want to watch it again, so it can't be too high on my list.

12. Creepshow 2 (1987)

R | 92 min | Comedy, Fantasy, Horror

39 Metascore

Three more bone-chilling tales that include a vengeful wooden Native American, a monstrous blob in a lake, and a hitchhiker who wants revenge and will not die.

Director: Michael Gornick | Stars: George Kennedy, Lois Chiles, Domenick John, Tom Savini
