Tanner is mostly known by his role as Antwon "Skills" Taylor on the CW show One Tree Hill. Tanner had a starring role in the 2005 film Coach Carter, where he starred alongside Samuel L. Jackson and has appeared in TV series such as NYPD Blue, Sister, Sister, Moesha, The Parkers, and CSI.

Tanner was arrested on April 16, 2009, and was accused by federal authorities of "knowingly and intentionally" transferring Social Security cards "with intent to defraud". He was handed a prison sentence of 3 months for the offense and had to report to prison by April 30, 2010.

Byrd was born and raised in Philadelphia, where he graduated from The Crefeld School in 1993. He began acting as a child, appearing as Arthur in the movie My Little Girl in 1986. He has been in movies including Dead Man, Sleepers, 8 Mile, Lift and Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid, and has the leading role in Confess, for which he won the Break-Out Performance Award at the 2006 Method Fest Independent Film Festival. Byrd also starred with long time friend/Rap Artist Will "Tha Vill" Fuller, Jerry Della Salla (Green Zone) and Director Clay Von Thomas. The four men worked on the highly anticipated Pilot called "The Barracks".
He starred as Dr. Sidney Trumaine in the television show Crossing Jordan. Before that he was a guest star in the seventh and eighth seasons of The Cosby Show for four episodes titled "Theo and the Kids" part 1 and 2, "Theo's Future," and "Cliff and Theo Come Clean." He also landed a role on Beverly Hills, 90210 as Rondinson Ashe III during the second season. He was also on the Touched by an Angel spin off Promised Land. He starred in the movie "Perfect Harmony".
Byrd also appeared in the TV series Ghostwriter as "Walter" in 1993 and portrayed the comical but defiant Oliver Cross on the British Children's television series, Chris Cross, which won an award for "Best Children's Series" in 1994. The movie centered around a group of friends in a hip hop dance crew who take part in underground dance competitions.
