Directed by: Walt Becker
Cast: Robin Williams, John Travolta, Seth Green
Running Time: 1 hr 30 mins
Rating: PG
Release Date: November 25, 2009
Plot: Dan and Charlie (Williams and Travolta) are two business partners who have been best friends for thirty years. Their life is thrown for a curve when they find out that Dan has two twins with “the one who got away” from seven years ago.
Who’S It For? Children will be educated clichés, and adults will get some kicks watching respectable actors subject themselves to thoughtless wacky humor. In modern comedy terms, fun for the whole family!
Expectations: Walt Becker directed Wild Hogs and the trailer had as many wacky situations as it could cram into a two minute spot. Signs were not looking good.
Scorecard (0-10)
Actors:
Robin Williams as Dan: Making an ass out of himself comes easier to him than Travolta, but he does »

#1 movie predicted correctly: 4 Weeks in a Row 1. The Twilight Saga: New Moon Twilight fell 62 percent. I've got this version falling 57.5 percent, an improvement, but still highly frontloaded. New Moon is being greatly helped this weekend by the overall lack of competition. Estimate: $61.0 million 2. Old Dogs The consensus here seems to be "why?" I'll tell you why. Because it worked once before (Wild Hogs), so they figure it will work again. If this cracks $30m you should pretty much prepare yourself for Bold Clogs. Estimate: $23.0 million 3. The Blind Side It had a very quiet weekend, even though it should have been a major storyline because it outperformed every prediction. After this weekend it should be near the $60m mark domestically, and as the production budget was only $29m they are looking pretty solid here. Estimate: $19.1 million 4. 2012 $461m worldwide cume, Sony can thank the international audiences for saving their bacon. Estimate: $12.0 million 5. Ninja Assassin Odd timing. »

We know how it is: You’d like to go to the movies this long holiday weekend, but you won’t be able to move off the sofa after all that turkey, plus: football! But you can have a multiplex-like experience at home with a collection of the right DVDs. And when someone asks you on Monday, “Hey, did you see Old Dogs this weekend?” you can reply, “No, I watched a bunch of other dads-suck movies that came before.” Instead Of: Old Dogs, in which John Travolta and Robin Williams get unexpectedly saddled with seven-year-old twins and go on to demonstrate what awful parental figures they are... Watch: Wild Hogs (2007), in which a bunch of suburban dads escape their terrible lives of 5,000-square-foot McMansions and mass consumerism by riding off into a motorcycle sitcom; Dogs seems keyed to appeal to the same audience, down to same star (Travolta) and »

Welcome back to another edition of our weekly box office poll. We took last week off because The Twilight Saga: New Moon was pretty much the obvious winner (as evidenced by its ginormous $142 million box office haul), but now we’re back with some new films arriving in theaters and what may or may not be a tighter competition. Let’s take a look: Old Dogs What’s The Scoop: From the folks who brought you Wild Hogs, here Robin Williams and John Travolta star as a couple of friends/business partners who, through some bizarre circumstances, find themselves in charge of 7-year-old twins. Why It Might Win The Weekend: If it does anywhere near the kind of business that Wild Hogs did ($39 million opening weekend, $253 million total worldwide), then Old Dogs...

One would think that with The Twilight Saga: New Moon pulling in over $140 million on opening weekend, the film would be on track for an enormous decline in its second week in theaters. But after reviewing the mid-weeks -- those vamps and werewolves brought in over $10 million both Monday and Tuesday -- New Moon is still in line to win the number one slot over the Thanksgiving holiday. The other sure thing this weekend is the second frame of the Sandra Bullock-starrer The Blind Side. The feel-good football flick received an astounding A+ from audiences exiting the theater-a score »

I will say this for Old Dogs: It is exactly as funny as you'd expect a movie to be that stars John Travolta and Robin Williams as two bachelors who must suddenly take care of precocious 7-year-old twins, and that was directed by the man who made Wild Hogs. Which is to say, it is not the least bit funny, not once, not even for a minute. Imagine a season's worth of plot devices from TV's most generic sitcom crammed into 88 excruciating minutes.
Here are the thoughts of Williams' character in this frantic, contrived mess: I had a one-night stand seven years ago, and it turns out I'm the father of twins! And now I have to babysit them for two weeks! But I'm working on the Big Account at my job, and I don't have time! Oh no, they don't allow children in my condos -- apparently not even temporarily, »

Why, yes, we are doing Movies This Week early. But it's also the start of the holidaze, with movies opening today and Thanksgiving feasts tomorrow, so Wednesday is the new Friday.
Opening in Austin theaters:
Fantastic Mr. Fox -- Wes Anderson's love child with the spirit of Roald Dahl is destined to top quite a few Best Of lists this year. The puppetry is mesmerizing, and you're sure to leave smiling. In short, it's cussing good. Read my review, and see once now so you're only slightly distracted when you go to the Alamo feast. After you see it once, you'll really want to see it again. It does hold up, and if you see movies on Thanksgiving, this is the movie to see.
Ninja Assassin -- Slick, dark Hollywood sword-porn. What it lacks in plot it makes up for in unimpressively outrageous fight scenes so dark you can barely see what's going on. »

It's confirmed. Director Walt Becker's Old Dogs, starring John Travolta and Robin Williams, is as bad as it looks from the trailer. (And that's really bad.)
"...stupefying dimwitted."
— Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
"Wild Hogs, Old Dogs — what's next, Bumps on Logs? Truly, I would rather watch John Travolta and Robin Williams sitting on a tree trunk, doing nothing, than endure their best efforts to energize this ol' hound."
— Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune
"Old Dogs does to the screen what old dogs do to the carpet. It's unfortunate that only the latter can be taken out and shot."
— Kyle Smith, New York Post
"So wretched that it should be unceremoniously put down, Old Dogs is a series of sub-sitcom sequences designed to destroy any affection once felt for John Travolta and Robin Williams."
— Nick Schager, Slant Magazine
"Six-year-old boys may laugh at the bowwow of a comedy Old Dogs. But then, »

Despite Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures releasing their family-orientated comedy "Old Dogs," uber-blockbuster "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" looks set to come off with a second weekend at the top in its sophomore weekend at play. Still, family presence in the box office should never be underestimated, especially Walt Becker-helmed ones. The director last took the wheel of another Travolta film in "Wild Hogs" and this time has Robin Williams and Seth Green on board. "Dogs" opens into 3,389 venues. Well, we got through the Twilight: New Moon predictions without any of the Twilight fans hating me too much, so with that out of the way it is on to the Thanksgiving weekend predictions here at the Reject Report. This weekend we have the expansion of The Fantastic Mr. Fox as well as two new wide releases Old Dogs and Ninja Assassin. These three open Wednesday and I'm going to predict how they will do and look ahead to see what the Friday-Sunday period has in store. In the end New Moon wound up with a little over $142 million for its weekend opening, and frankly I don't see how it can be topped this coming week either. Even if it drops 50 percent it makes 71 million. I think the drop will be steeper than that, but I think this still makes it to $50 million this holiday weekend. How the heck are these other movies going to compete with »

Making a movie aimed at kids gives filmmakers license for a lot of things: butt jokes and poop jokes, of course—you can’t have one without the other—but also reaction shots of cute animals and montage sequence after montage sequence. But it’s one thing to make a movie with simpler tastes in mind, and another to make one insulting even to half-formed little brains. Old Dogs, the latest from the director of Wild Hogs, casts Robin Williams and John Travolta as longtime business partners—the former divorced, the latter a lifelong bachelor—who have to team up ... »

The choice, it is yours.

A selection at Cannes 2008 and this year's Swiss Oscar hopeful, the sophomore feature from Ursula Meier centers on a middle class couple (Isabelle Huppert, Olivier Gourmet) that enjoys bringing up their children away from urban life in the French countryside. However, the construction of a highway near their home leads to a divide between the two on what's best for their family as the pollution from the cars and the incessant noise begins to drive them a little mad.

Here was the farewell email that Disney's Jim Gallagher sent to his staff this past week: Friends, I've had the pleasure of sending a number of these emails to you all over the past 3+ years, to celebrate our numerous #1 openings and the box office records we've set together. Today however, I am sad to announce that due to the restructuring, I will no longer be President of Marketing for the studios, and that I will be leaving the company. I have been extremely proud of the marketing campaigns we've built and executed together: Pirates 3, Wall-e, Wild Hogs, Disney-Pixar's Up, The [...] »

When you've got a father and a son who can't stand each other plus a firearm, you've got a Marvin Gaye situation on your hands, or Heath Ledger's fate in Monster's Ball, or at the very least a really, really tense Thanksgiving. Apparently, though, it can all turn out Ok, as it does in Fathers and Guns, the French-Canadian action-comedy that's about to get an English-language remake at Sony. According to Variety, Frank Marshall and Kathleen Kennedy will produce the remake alongside the original film's producers Denise Robert and Emile Gaudreault. The film is about a father-and-son cop team who are assigned to investigate an outdoor camp for fathers and sons to grow closer together through adventure therapy. You can probably see where this is going. With the right pair of actors-- please, please do not hire John Travolta, Robin Williams, or anyone associated with Wild Hogs-- this »

Entertainment Weekly has uncovered the supposed casting for the upcoming live-action/hybrid adventure that will bring the lovable picnic basket thief Yogi Bear to the big screen. The Hanna-Barbera cartoon will be adapted into a 3D film by director Eric Brevig (Journey to the Center of the Earth), with a screenplay from Wild Hogs scribe Brad Copeland. We now know who will voice Yogi, his trusty little friend Boo Boo and who will play a documentary filmmaker trying to get a glimpse of these two hungry bears. Dan Aykroyd will voice Yogi, with pop star turned actor Justin Timberlake taking his side as the voice of Boo-Boo. The lovely Anna Faris, seen most recently in the twisted Observe and Report, will play the film's documentarian, a girl named Rachel. The story will revolve around two animated bears -- one of whom wears a collar and tie, but no shirt -- who are the antagonists to one Park »

From Movies Blog: Remember kids, the truth is always far, far stranger than fiction. It was a little more than a year ago that we found out the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon series "Yogi Bear" would be getting a big screen treatment. There was no casting announced or anything like that; just that the project was happening with "Surf's Up" director Ash Brannon at the helm and that it would feature a mix of live-action and CG animation.
Well today, the plot thickened. Variety reports that Anna Faris, Justin Timberlake and Dan Aykroyd are all in negotiations to join the cast of the movie, which will now be directed by "Journey to the Center of the Earth" helmer Eric Brevig from a script by Brad Copeland ("Wild Hogs").
