It's as much of an annual tradition as turkey, football, and awkward family dynamics -- the Thanksgiving TV marathon. But so many channels. Well, let us be your guide. Here's our guide to the best marathon programming for Thursday, Nov. 26. *We're guessing that A&E's The First 48 marathon might be »

Must Watch: Impressive New Trailer for Fox's Percy Jackson

18 November 2009 2:58 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Fox has quietly debuted yet another new trailer for Percy Jackson & the Olympians, making this the third trailer we've seen for this movie so far. Up until this point, we haven't really known what this would be like, what would happen in it and what the story would be. But this trailer finally gives us a glimpse of all that and I've got to say I'm a little more than curious now. In fact, I'm actually very impressed, this looks great, I'm totally in. The effects look good, even though they're probably far from being done, and the story looks pretty entertaining. My only complaint is that this means we'll see two different Medusa's next year! Watch the international trailer for Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief: Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief is directed by Chris Columbus, of everything from Adventures in Babysitting to Home Alone ... »

I Love You Beth Cooper Blu-ray Review

18 November 2009 9:14 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Chris Columbus used to have a magic touch. Sure, you might not have liked the movies, but he was the hand behind the first two Home Alone movies and the first two Harry Potter films. He’s had misfires, for sure, but his first major script was Gremlins. Gremlins. But when you look at his filmography he goes from highs to lows, but there’s something of a chance-taker in him too. He was the guy who wanted to direct Rent, for god’s sake. And though his plastic hands have released such odious affairs as Stepmom and Bicentennial Man, he’s not a filmmaker to write off. My review of his latest - I Love You Beth Cooper - after the jump.

For his latest, he worked with Fox, got a midsummer release date, and when the film came out it was dumped like hot garbage. Perhaps it was having an unknown lead, »

Chris Columbus, Babysitter?

17 November 2009 9:40 AM, PST | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

An odd little item at the Lat shares a brief word with Chris Columbus, the director best known for launching the franchises Home Alone, Harry Potter and next year's Percy Jackson. Neither the reporter nor even Columbus's Potter producer, however, give him much credit for anything beyond his gifted handling of child actors. "Chris Columbus was the exact right director for those films," producer David Heyman said of the first two Potter movies, while Columbus seems to acknowledge priming them for megastardom first and performance second. "They've really turned into terrific adults," Columbus said. "And that being said, they've also turned into terrific actors, you know." Sort of? Somewhere, the Culkin family is feeling more ripped off than ever. [Lat] »

Blu-Ray Review: ‘I Love You, Beth Cooper’ Inspires Nothing But Hate

16 November 2009 8:08 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Chris Columbus is not a filmmaker renowned for his use of subtlety. He seems incapable of telling a relatable human story without relying on his trademark brand of sophomoric slapstick. I was surprised that Macaulay Culkin didn’t pop up in Columbus’s “Rent,” and start hurling paint cans at the characters during their “Seasons of Love.” Even at age 51, Columbus is still an unruly child at heart.

That’s why his best films are the ones aimed at children, such as the original “Home Alone” or the first two “Harry Potter” installments. But when he attempts to reach an older audience, the results are often disastrous. And in an era of exceptional adult comedies, “I Love You, Beth Cooper” is a flat-out embarrassment.

Blu-Ray Rating: 1.0/5.0

This film proves that any source material can be drained of its humanity. The script was written by Larry Doyle, who based it »

Beyoncé's Thanksgiving Special: On Stage And Behind The Scenes

12 November 2009 8:56 AM, PST | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

Thanksgiving night is usually reserved for spiraling deep into a food coma while watching "Home Alone," but this year there will be an alternative to that. ABC is airing a special called "Beyoncé: I Am ... Yours" on Thanksgiving night at 9 p.m. The show will be made up primarily of a performance from her "I Am" tour (in particular, a show at the Wynn in Las Vegas), but also promises to feature behind-the-scenes footage and a rarely-seen look into her professional life on the road.

The first teaser ad just appeared online, and it looks like it will be worth fighting back the inevitable Tryptophan-induced psychosis to stay up and watch. The special promises to show the audience a side of Beyoncé that we've never seen, and it may just live up to that hype. There is footage of her in rehearsals, overseeing production and, in one especially telling scene, »

Forgotten Films: Bmx Bandits

11 November 2009 10:47 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Forgotten Films [1] is a semi-regular feature on Film Junk where we explore interesting movies that have fallen off the radar or slipped through the cracks over the years. If you've seen the recent documentary Not Quite Hollywood, about the history of Australian b-movies and exploitation flicks, then you're probably familiar with the name Brian Trenchard-Smith. Trenchard-Smith directed some of the most beloved cult classics from down under including The Man From Hong Kong, Turkey Shoot, and Dead-End Drive In, before eventually going on to helm some of the later installments of the Leprechaun series. To the average person that might not mean much, but for hardcore genre fans, that basically makes him royalty. Back in the '80s, he also took some time away from the carnage and blood-soaked mayhem to direct a family-friendly film of sorts called Bmx Bandits. The movie has an interesting claim to fame in that »

What are Your Favorite Winter Holiday Themed Movies?

26 October 2009 2:39 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

I wasn't quite sure how to properly word the headline for this post considering I want to make sure you understand I am talking about the season pretty much running from Thanksgiving to Christmas, but I also want to make sure you know the film itself doesn't have to necessarily be about the holidays.

Take Die Hard for instance, it's set during Christmas time, but it isn't a Christmas film. However, it fits in with what I am looking for here. Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, Eyes Wide Shut, Fanny and Alexander, Batman Returns, Gremlins, The Thin Man and When Harry Met Sally are other examples. Hell, I would even say Rocky IV and Lethal Weapon count. As a matter of fact, I would say the non-Christmas, Christmas movies are the more interesting additions. How about The Shining or even Psycho?

Then, of course, I personally love films such as Love, »

Where the Wild Things Are - “Scene Selection” Review

20 October 2009 11:24 AM, PDT | MovieSet.com | See recent MovieSet.com news »

Children are so hard to incorporate into film and theater. The actors always are pesky, uncooperative, and rarely any good. However Max Records of “Where The Wild Things Are” stands out among today’s young actors with composure, emotion, and charm.

Records plays Max, an innocent boy who throws tantrums in a bratty, boisterous manor. He acts exactly as a child should though, beginning the film playing in the snow, throwing snowballs, and building an igloo. He ends up getting hurt and crying like a child should, but in return we see the wrath of Max and the love of his mother. Later Max plays out the scene from the book step for step by throwing a tantrum at the kitchen table and gets sent to bed. Flash forward and we see Max traveling to his own world toward the wild things. Max interacts and has an uneven time with the creatures. »

Chris Columbus was responsible for a lot of the movies I loved when I was a kid. Dude wrote Gremlins and Goonies, directed Adventures In Babysitting and Home Alone. Somewhere along the way though (Bicentennial Man?), the wheels fell off and things haven't been the same since. I mean I Love You, Beth Cooper should've been vintage Chris Columbus but it was an absolute train wreck. 'Where The Wild Things Are' Stars Reveal Their Histories With The Book

Beverly Hills — It's a rite of passage. It's the flexing of one of our most important muscles: imagination. But most importantly, it's pure and simple fun.

It is the reading of Maurice Sendak's classic 1963 book "Where the Wild Things Are." And for five decades, it has been a childhood tradition.

"It was read to me," 48-year-old Oscar winner Forest Whitaker recalled recently, remembering the first time he became aware of the book that he'll help turn into a feature film this weekend. "First, it was read to me as a kid. And then it was one of those books I was able to like when I got old enough to read. »

'Big Bang Theory': Raj, deported? Sheldon to the rescue!

13 October 2009 1:35 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Alas, filmmaker Chris Columbus does not appear to tweet (I checked), so we must for now remain bereft of his feelings concerning Leonard, Sheldon, Wolowitz, and Raj's tradition of celebrating "Columbus" Day by watching the Columbus-penned generational touchstones Goonies, Gremlins, and Young Sherlock Holmes -- probably the nicest Columbus Day joke ever made about the Home Alone director, in fact. (And yes, Young Sherlock Holmes is indeed a touchstone, if only because it is the first major motion picture to feature a character fashioned entirely via computer.) (Whoa, got a bit Sheldon up in here. Apologies.) The holiday merriment was short-lived, »

Review: ‘Whip It’

Drew Barrymore makes an impressive directorial debut with this coming of age story set in the world of Roller Derby. This is a sports movie for women, by women, starring women.  I suspect men will have little trouble enjoying it as well. Adorable Ellen Page (Juno) plays Bliss, a socially awkward teenager from Bodeen, Texas, who is thrust into the world of pageants by her mother (Marcia Gay Harden). One day while shopping in a thrift store, she sees three women skate into the store  and leave some fliers about an upcoming Roller Derby.

Intrigued, she recruits her best friend Pash (Alia Shawkat of Arrested Development) to venture into Austin for the event. She is immediately captivated by the sport. She dusts off her old Barbie skates and tries out for the team. After making the team, she becomes an unlikely hero, using her small stature to weave in, out, »
