WGA, Now Oppose Comcast-nbcu Deal

By Ira Teinowitz

The Writers Guild, both East and West, Consumer’s Union, Common Cause and even the National Organization for Women on Thursday are among those who are banding together to oppose the $30 billion Comcast-nbc Universal deal.

In an open letter sent Thursday to the White House and to members of the Senate and House committees which will review the deal, the groups claim that the merger “will have a devastating effect on the media marketplace.” The 25 groups that signed the letters also included the American Cable Association, which represents smaller cable system operators; »

Ratings: ABC Laughs Big, 'People's Choice' Up

By Josef Adalian

ABC's Wednesday comedy block returned strongly last night, while CBS' presentation of "The People's Choice Awards" upticked to a two-year high.

After a four-week break from originals, the ABC yukfests came back with a bang, particularly "Modern Family" (4.1/11 among adults 18-49) -- the night's No. 1 show in the demo. That's the best number for "Mf" since its premiere.

That helped ABC's "Cougar Town" (3.3/8), which finished 18 percent ahead of its last first-run telecast in December and scored its best demo rating since mid-October. Wedn »

Denied: NBC Says Leno Not Canceled

By Josef Adalian

Update 1:13 Pm Pdt

TMZ.com reports that after its Olympics hiatus on Feb. 1, "The Jay Leno Show" will move back to the 11:30 p.m. time slot. Citing sources it does not name, the report says it's not clear whether Jay's show, would be a half-hour lead-in to Conan O'Brien, or a full hour -- presumably sending O'Brien to the curb.

If any such a decision has really been made, it would be a complete surprise to the camp of O'Brien, who currently occupies the 11:30 slot, according to a person close to the situation who spoke to TheWrap.

'An Education' Leads BAFTA 'Longlists'

By Steve Pond

The Academy Awards may release a variety of shortlists, but the British Academy has a different tradition: longlists.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts on Thursday released the lists of the 15 films that have survived the first of three rounds of voting for the Orange British Academy Film Awards.  (Fyi, Orange is the sponsor; it's like the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl or something.)

With 17 mentions, "An Education" pops up most often on the lists.  "Inglourious Basterds" is two behind.  Six of the mentions of "An Education&qu »

DGA Open to Non-Members, But Not Animators

By Steve Pond

The Directors Guild nominations are due shortly – Thursday morning, probably around 10:30 a.m. Pacific time. So before they arrive, and before pundits start deconstructing the meaning of who’s been nominated and who’s been overlooked, a quick lesson in what this particular guild is looking for:

The DGA has no rule requiring directors to be guild members in order to be nominated. Unlike the Writers Guild, it does not even require films to be signatories to the DGA contract. If a director is eligible to be represented by the guild, as all live-action directors are, »

Good Morning, Oscar: January 7

By Steve Pond

In this morning’s roundup of Oscar news and notes from around the web, everybody’s talking about the guilds, both writers and directors.

Peter Knegt finds that “An Education” joins the three Weinstein Company movies as ineligible for the Writers Guild Awards. In this case, though, British writer (and WGA member) Nick Hornby seems to be the victim of a new rule that didn’t even exist when the film was made, according to what his reps tell Knegt. (indieWIRE)

Melena Ryzik, on the other hand, checked with the WGA and got a different story: Hornby is »

Scripps Channnels Black on Cablevision

By the New York Times

Chris Birckhead came home Tuesday night hoping that his TiVo had recorded “Chopped,” his favorite show on the Food Network. Instead, it had recorded a looped commercial from Cablevision, his cable provider, saying the network’s owner, Scripps, had taken his show away.

About 3 million cable households in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut have been affected by a bitter argument between the cable provider and Scripps Networks over how much Cablevision subscribers should pay for the Food Network and Hgtv.

The feud has already dragged on for almost a week.

The 3D Revolution Comes - Will the People Show Up?

By Carolyn Giardina & Daniel Frankel

Part II Tomorrow: Holograms in the Home.

It’s no wonder the 3D hype machine is out in full force. With the success of James Cameron’s “Avatar,” it's been a very good year for the format. And starting Thursday, gadget makers, TV networks and movie studios at Las Vegas’ annual Consumer Electronics Show will ramp up the biggest home-entertainment technology push since high-def was foisted upon the populace a decade ago. The message is clear: the next wave of entertainment lies in 3D television. But what if the industry throws a 3D party and no one »

FX Circling TV Rights to 'Avatar'

By Josef Adalian

"Avatar" has amazing FX -- and it soon could be aring on FX. The cable network, that is.

According to people familiar with the situation, the News Corp. - owned cable network is in discussions to acquire the initial broadcast rights to James Cameron's mega-blockbuster. The network had signaled its strong interest in the project even before the movie opened and started its domination of the box office.

On one level, FX's likely deal is a complete non-surprise. Because News Corp.'s film unit is distributing the movie, it's hard to imagine FX not having a leg up in nego »

In an article appearing in Thursday's New York Times, the non-profit Creative Coalition comes under scrutiny for agreeing to produce a documentary about obesity funded by GlaxoSmithKline, the pharmaceutical giant and maker of Allo, a weight-loss drug. The film is not yet made, but a director may be announced at the upcoming Sundance Festival. "While corporations back films all the time, it is rare for one to pay for a documentary with direct hopes that it will translate into bigger profits," the article states. The Hurt Locker” has picked up plenty of high-profile fans over the past year, starting with the critics groups that have named it the best film of the year. Kathryn Bigelow’s tense drama about a bomb disposal unit in Iraq has scored a rare trifecta with the three most prestigious groups – the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, the New York Film Critics Circle and the National Society of Film Critics – plus top honors from close to a dozen other critics groups.

Nikki's Deadline Expands, in a Way

By Sharon Waxman

Nikki Finke has finally expanded, if you want to call it that.

Deadline.com, formerly DeadlineHollywoodDaily, made some big pronouncements six months ago after being bought by Jay Penske's Mail.com Media Corporation. Mmc announced its intention in June to hire a New York correspondent, which Finke told me in an interview at the time would happen "soon."

Since then, I get asked about once a week if I'm hearing when that might actually occur and with whom. I've no idea, but apparently Finke has decided to expand her reach nonetheless with interviews by Diane Hai »

Shaffner Wins Runoff For TV Academy Top Spot

By Josef Adalian

TV Academy chairman and CEO John Shaffner has won a runoff battle and will serve another two-year term at the organization.

Shaffner defeated digital-focused Brian Seth Hurst, who had been second vice-chariman of the Academy. Last month, the two battled to a tie, leading to Wednesday night's runoff.

While Shaffner won, he now has the unenviable task of trying to keep the Emmy franchise alive. The Academy's deal with the Big Four broadcasters expires this fall, and early indications are the networks aren't rushing to re-up.
