Remaking 'F/X'
Not a flick I'd peg as prime update material, apparently MGM has been tossing ideas around for a reboot of Robert Mandel's 1986 flick F/X. More below the break. Moviehole.net is reporting that MGM has been working on their F/X update for at least the past few years. The holdup? The script. So what else is new? The original F/X starred Bryan Brown as a special effects artist who gets wrapped up with the wrong kind of folk when a 'staged' mob assassination goes awry. Brian Dennehy plays the investigating detective. I liked the original F/X (and its 1991 sequel F/X 2: The Deadly Art of Illusion, which I actually prefer over the original) and how the film played its 'is it real or not' »

Better Behave for 'The Sitter'
Who says that PG-Rated horror films can't be scary? I may have missed the boat on R.L. Stine and his creepy brand of children's horror literature (most notably the Goosebumps series) but I know several people who swear by them. That being said, I know firsthand how books and movies intended for children can also successfully scare the living crap out of adults (look at just about every live action Disney film from the 70's/80s: Return to Oz, Watcher in the Woods, The Black Hole, Something Wicked This Way Comes etc. etc.). It was announced today that R.L. Stine's book The Sitter will be making its way to the big screen and I'm prepared to be spooked, more below. According to Variety, Furst Films (producers of »
Review: 'Bitch Slap'
You just don't see all that many low-budget indie action flicks like Bitch Slap. (Why? Because action flicks are expensive and considerably more difficult to shoot and cut than, say, your typical romantic drama.) Oh you may come across one or two festival titles that offer an enthusiastic gunfight here and there -- but for hardcore, non-stop, for better or for worse "action" action, we usually have to look to the big studios with the deep pockets. Or you could set your cable box to remind you when Rick Jacobson's Bitch Slap hits the airwaves because, aside from a few glaring (and occasionally grating) missteps, this is a low-budget indie action movie with more energy than sense, more mayhem than brains, and more »
Araya's Health Issues Force Slayer to Postpone Tour
7 hours ago
This is definitely a bringdown – both for the members of Slayer and their loyal fans (including us), all of whom were looking forward to the band's history-making combined tour with Megadeth and Testament. The latest report from the band's management states that frontman/bassist Tom Araya's increasing back problems will now require surgery. Read below to find out how this turn of events will impact the 'American Carnage' tour and the band's immediate future… Araya, whose onstage style throughout Slayer's quarter-century-plus reign has always included intense head-banging action, started complaining of back pain last fall while the band was touring Australia, New Zealand and Japan. »
Put a 'Grindhouse' in Your Pocket
If, like me, you're *cough* thirtysomething *cough*, then you probably discovered most of your favorite fright flicks on good old-fashioned VHS tape. In the light of today's high-def renaissance, the pan-and-scan, murky image quality, and (for many of us) mono sound with which we experienced those little plastic black monoliths don't exactly inspire nostalgia. Author/film historian Jacques Boyreau feels differently, having captured his love of the late medium (or at the least the art that adorned it) in Portable Grindhouse: The Lost Art of the VHS Box. The above art for Slashdance -- so '80s you can practically hear Irene Cara singing -- is »

They like to give you a taste of the shows that they will feature in their annual Paley Fest, which allows fans a chance to screen episodes of their favorite shows and sit in on panels with the creators and stars. Before the holidays, the Paley center whet our whistle with the announcement that FEARnet's favorite new show, The Vampire Diaries will have a slot on the schedule. Variety today announced that Dexter will also be among the shows honored this year. The Paley Center has not yet confirmed this – their schedule isn't made public until January 20 – but with its record-demolishing season, it seems only right that Dexter get a panel. Stay »

(In the wake of Twilight, Vampire Diaries, and True Blood this is no mean feat.) I was one of the first online journos lucky enough to chat with the Spierig brothers upon completion of their new epic, way back in October of '07. Hit the jump to read the conversation we had, and decide if you think Daybreakers is worth checking out when it, at long last, opens this Friday, January 8. When did the two of you begin working together as filmmakers? Peter: Michael and I, we started making »

7 January 2010 10:33 AM, PST
James Franco (Spider-Man) will star as mountaineer Aron Ralston in 127 Hours, Danny Boyle's 'man vs nature' style follow up to Slumdog Millionaire. According to Variety, The 'true life story centers on Ralston who spent 5 days with his right forearm pinned under a boulder during a climb in May of 2003. He used a dull knife to amputate the limb and then scaled a 65 foot sheer wall and then hiked out before flagging down a family that gave him food and water. He was finally rescued by helicopter'. Filming begins in March in Utah for a late 2010 release. Sounds like it could make for a great double feature with Adam Green's Frozen. »

Stephen King Takes the Mike in 'Black Ribbons'
7 January 2010 9:03 AM, PST
Literary legend Stephen King has populated countless dark worlds with indelible characters, but recently the author decided to become one himself – as a doomed talk-radio host transmitting his final broadcast in country-rocker Shooter Jennings' apocalyptic record Black Ribbons. The spoken-word material is interwoven with the sounds of Jennings' band Hierophant throughout the epic album – described as "an electrifying thrill ride across a dense, dark and gloriously decadent musical landscape." Get the scoop on the origins of Black Ribbons below the fold! Shooter (son of Country legend Waylon Jennings) and producer Dave Cobb actually completed the genre-busting concept album early last year, but »
'Strangeland 2' in 90 Days or Your Money Back
6 January 2010 5:15 PM, PST
An interesting little article popped up on NewsNet5 regarding Twisted Sister front man Dee Snider's Strangeland 2: Disciple today. Apparently the flick has been approved for a tax credit in Ohio. Woo Hoo! Somebody better give Dee a call, and quick! According to the article, there are three films that have been given the Ok for this tax credit and the '3 new movies hope to bring hundred [sic] of jobs to Northeast Ohio', although I have my doubts that the movies themselves are hoping this, but I'm sure Ohio is. The article continues, 'The three projects filming in northeast Ohio have combined budgets of $15 million and are expected to employ 394 cast and crew members and nearly 1,200 paid extras and bring more »
Compare Yourself to the King
6 January 2010 3:10 PM, PST
Stephen King has announced his Top 10 Movies of 2009. And it's a pretty outrageous list. Alongside such critical faves as The Hurt Locker, King, ever the populist, makes such left-field choices as 2012. Seriously, Steve, I love you. You've penned some of the finest horror novels ever written. But 20-friggin-12?! After putting Death Race (a movie so bad it went around the laps one and half times and stopped at boring) in your list last year, I didn't think there was any way you could still surprise me. But I gotta hand it to you -- you've done it. Hit the jump for the link to King's list and see how your picks for 2009 measure up to the »
First Official Photo of Mad Hatter Depp!
6 January 2010 2:07 PM, PST
Disney just sent us the first official photograph of Tim Burton's latest maniac, the Mad Hatter, as portrayed by Burton regular Johnny Depp in the director's upcoming take on Alice in Wonderland. Check out the full image after the jump. We've seen this Hatter before in artwork and on posters, but what do you think of this photo of Depp in character? The look is as distinct and imaginative as anything in Burton's previous work. But the look isn't what's sometimes shaky in Burton's movies -- it's the story. Here's hoping Linda Woolverton's screenplay is strong enough to withstand any visual extravagances (however gorgeous they may be) on the part of the »
