The Fourth Kind (Film Review)

1 November 2009 10:00 AM, PST

The Fourth Kind is an incredibly unsatisfying alien abduction movie.  Unsatisfying because it has neither an alien or an abduction!

In Nome, Alaska, people under hypnosis remember being abducted by aliens who first notice they are being watched by an owl--that is not an owl. After seeing this boring flick, I would be amazed if owls want to watch it (even if they are not owls).

The title comes from categories of alien contact. The beginning of this film is strange. Actress Milla Jovovich walks out in an Alaskan forest to explain that she's going to be playing Dr. Abigail Tyler. Then for the next 10 minutes, we see purportedly real footage of the 'real' Tyler, sometimes in split screen with Milla Jovovich. While that sounds interesting, it really isn't--it's distracting and the people look nothing like who they are playing.

I'm all for verisimilitude, but this gets dull fast. Just as you're sick of it, …

Hardware (DVD/Blu-ray Review)

30 October 2009 12:39 PM, PDT

“This is what you want…this is what you get…this is what you want…this is what you get…” Public Image Ltd. chants under the end credits of Richard Stanley’s Hardware. If what you’ve been wanting for the last decade is a worthy disc release of the 1990 sci-fi shocker, what you get from Severin Films’ recently issued two-dvd set and Blu-ray is everything you could imagine, and a few things you probably couldn’t.

First and foremost is a fine 1.85:1 transfer that holds the hyperstylized, vibrantly hued visual scheme (described by Stanley amongst the extras as “rock ’n’ roll lighting”) extremely well, with Dolby Digital 5.1 audio that’s equally aggressive. Stanley’s command of sound and image elevates Hardware above a basic storyline that he freely admits is derivative of any number of past genre films, citing everything from spaghetti Westerns and classic science fiction literature …

Slaughtered (Film Review)

29 October 2009 7:49 AM, PDT

The Australian-made Slaughtered is the sort of movie that shouldn’t get overlooked in the current resurgence of slasher films, which includes all the franchise remakes/reimaginings like Halloween/Friday The 13th, new attempts to establish unstoppable killers such as Hatchet and Laid To Rest or its low-budget, comical Aussie contemporary I Know How Many Runs You Scored Last Summer. To put it simply, Slaughtered has been made by someone with more than a clue, and who has been as relentless as any disfigured maniac to get her movie across the finish line without sacrificing the entertainment experience.

Kate Glover, now living in the UK with no less than John Landis attached to direct another of her projects, might not be the first female from Down Under to write, produce and direct a horror feature; South Australian Sue Brown and her downbeat wonder Family Demons just beat Slaughtered at the postproduction line. …

Dracula The Un-dead (Book Review)

29 October 2009 7:45 AM, PDT

He is, without a doubt, the most famous vampire (yes, even more famous than Edward from the Twilight franchise). His villainy is legendary and his story inspired centuries of sequels in both books and movie form. Spawned from the genius of Bram Stoker, Dracula gave readers the original figure who started the bloodsucker craze. Now, in 2009, an actual descendant of the Stoker line is bringing Vlad the Impaler back to life.

Dracula The Un-dead (out now in hardcover from Dutton) was written by Dacre Stoker (Bram’s great-grandnephew) and Dracula historian Ian Holt. Equipped with Bram’s personal notes and thorough research, they have turned out a novel that is definitely worthy of sitting on the shelf beside the 1897 classic.

Told from several perspectives (as was the original), Dracula The Un-dead re-introduces readers to favorite characters like Mina Murray/Harker, Jonathan Harker, Dr. Jack Seward, Arthur Holmwood and Abraham Van Helsing. …

Welcome to Spirit Camp; first pics and info

29 October 2009 7:41 AM, PDT

Actress Julin passed on a couple of exclusive pics (see them below) from Spirit Camp, a cheerleader-slasher flick in which she plays one of the lead roles. The film was written, produced and directed (and shot, edited and scored) by Kerry Beyer, an acclaimed fashion photographer who won the Slamdance Anarchy Film Showcase and was a semi-finalist for a Nicholl Fellowship in screenwriting.

Julin appears in the film as Rachel, leader of the popular girls at a cheerleader camp. When Goth chick Nikki (Roxy Vandiver) is sent there as part of her rehabilitation from a juvenile correction facility, the two enter into a bitter rivalry—until other members of the squad begin dying horribly, and Nikki, Rachel and the other survivors must band together against the mysterious maniac who’s stalking them. The cast also includes Brandon Smith, Megan Moser, Amy Morris, Jon Paul Burkhart, Kavon Rafat, Katy Rowe, Phil Leggett and George Brock. …

Original Evil Dead roaring back to the big screen

29 October 2009 7:39 AM, PDT

Grindhouse Releasing has announced that it will return Sam Raimi’s 1983 fright classic The Evil Dead to theaters. The company plans to send the unrated shocker into midnight bookings, similar to its revival of Lucio Fulci’s The Beyond a decade ago in partnership with Quentin Tarantino.

Grindhouse’s Bob Murawski, who edited Raimi’s Army Of Darkness, the Spider-man films and Drag Me To Hell, and Sage Stallone recently worked out a deal with the director, producer Rob Tapert and star Bruce Campbell to give Evil Dead new theatrical exposure. “Nothing can prepare an audience for what they are about to see, because nothing punishes an audience like Evil Dead—especially on the big screen,” Campbell says. “I’m really glad it’s back. People are gonna be hurt.” It’s certainly better than a remake… Grindhouse is currently arranging for playdates in both the U.S. and Canada …

Gay Of The Dead 26: Big Bear Horror Film Fest Recap, Part 2

28 October 2009 10:00 PM, PDT

Part 2 of the Big Bear Horror Film Festival recap. Read Part 1 here.

Saturday

After being up way too late the night before watching Golden Girls and Sex And The City reruns in my hotel room (P.S., I’m totally gay), it was time to get back to the Big Bear Horror Film Festival for a really great film, Die-ner (Get It?).

Yes, the “Get It?” is part of the film title, which I’m now publicly begging the filmmakers to change. Why? Because this film is so much smarter than the title. Die-ner (Get It?) is a well directed, well written and well acted serial-killer-plus-zombie flick that makes great use of its limited resources. I don’t want to give too much away, but I definitely recommend Patrick Horvath’s awesome motion picture.

As we walk out of the theater for a quick break, J.T. Seaton* and Michael Simon* join our gay horror cabal. …

Terrifyingly Gnarly #18 – House Of The Devil’s A.J. Bowen

28 October 2009 5:38 PM, PDT

To me, it’s fitting that in our lengthy conversation, actor A.J. Bowen tells me he was close to answering the phone with Tom Atkins’ famous line, “Thrill Me.” With his phenomenal facial hair (which I open the interview with) and true talent showcased in our beloved genre, I can see him attaining the heights of that classic ’80s hero. This Friday, Ti West’s much anticipated House Of The Devil reaches theaters (you can currently check it out on VOD, and you should!) where you can see Bowen in a relatively small but integral and very fun role. Punch drunk in love with the film since I saw it earlier this year at Tribeca and a huge admirer of Bowen’s excellent work in The Signal, I knew I’d have to get him talking about it all. So read on, and get excited about the lumberjack resembling future of horror, …

North 40 – Issues #1-4 (Comic Reviews)

27 October 2009 11:21 PM, PDT

Small towns are always the strangest in my book. I’ve taken many roads across this old Us of A, and the ones that scare me the most are the places that looked tucked away like a secret hiding place for monsters. Question is... were they hiding monsters? They gotta live somewhere right?

North 40 – Issue #1-4 | WildStorm Comics

Written by Aaron Williams | Art by Fiona Staples

And indeed the monsters do; just now born into the WildStorm Universe in the backwards place of Conover County in a small town called Lufton... just off North 40. The title is a simple but effective one, basically saying monsters can be anywhere on the map without the overused words like “dark” and “evil” to describe the place. You kind of get that eerie feeling already when you hear it along the lines of Route 66, Elm Street, and Sleepy Hollow Lane. North 40 gives birth to many monsters, …

A look back at Night Of The Comet

27 October 2009 11:14 PM, PDT

So you just saw Zombieland and you're desperately looking for another fun zombie-filled end of the world movie with strong female characters? Look no further than the brilliant '80s horror comedy Night Of The Comet!

When a comet passes over the earth, rendering everyone witnessing it into red dust, the only survivors are two Valley Girl sisters, responsible Regina (Catherine Mary Stewart) and her little sister, spoiled cheerleader Samantha (Kelli Maroney).

The two girls wander Southern California, enjoying malls without crowds, driving fast through empty streets and even DeeJaying at an abandoned radio station (Samantha cheerfully announces she'll be taking requests "from all you teenage mutant comet zombies!"). In a funny commentary on boy/girl relations, when Regina and Samantha run into some teenage box boys, they plan to kill and eat the girls!

Night brings in a secret underground lab, a virus, and other apocalyptic motifs, but never …

The Red Chord – Fed Through The Teeth Machine (Musick Review)

27 October 2009 11:04 PM, PDT

Massachusetts’ masters of mayhem, The Red Chord, have just released their latest (and by far their greatest) CD entitled Fed Through The Teeth Machine, a ravenous rampage of raw hatred directed at the trendy bands that litter the music scene. Their fourth full-length release showcases their uncompromising song writing style which sets them miles above the rest with their highly technical guitar riffs, insane drumming, and ferocious layered vocals. But not everything is played on Fed Through The Teeth Machine is at 800 beats per minute, the brutal break-downs and sublime solos add a decorous divergence from the in-your-face intensity felt throughout.

The Red Chord has been together for over 9 years now, and in that time they’ve harnessed their powerful audial-attack into a mind-blowing assault of Death-core domination. From the first note heard to the last scream shouted, Fed Through The Teeth Machine is a non-stop barrage of blistering blast beats, …

50 Influential Scream Queens: Part 2

27 October 2009 10:57 PM, PDT

Before I launch into the conclusion of my 50 Influential Scream Queens (read part 1 here), please let me remind you that this list is based upon my personal taste, and my personal taste alone. I didn't poll 100 Fango readers, the Fango staff or any other form of 'industry professionals'. It's all opinion, so if you feel I've wronged a certain actress by excluding them from the list, don't leap to brand the entire Fango crew 'vile'.  I probably just don't personally find their work to be that influential. Either that or I'm just ignorant to their accomplishments!

25. Mia Farrow: Mia's genre work may be a bit limited, but that doesn't change the fact that Rosemary's Baby will forever be regarded as one of the creepiest films in history. Farrow's portrayal of Rosemary Woodhouse is harrowing to say the least, and will always remain (in my mind) one of the best performances the genre has seen. …

Milla Jovovich Faces new terrors

27 October 2009 10:04 PM, PDT

Variety reports that Milla Jovovich, the Resident Evil series star soon to be seen in Universal’s paranormal thriller The Fourth Kind (pictured), will topline Faces In The Crowd for Forecast Pictures, Radar Films and Minds Eye Entertainment. The film marks the English-language directorial debut of French filmmaker Julien Magnat, who also scripted.

Jovovich will play the survivor of a serial killer’s attack that leaves her suffering from a condition called prosopagnosia, which renders her unable to recognize faces. As the features of other people change to her every time she sees them, the murderer continues to stalk her, determined to finish the job. Magnat previously wrote and directed the femme-monster-slayer saga Bloody Mallory; Faces, set to roll in March, will be produced by Stomp The Yard director Sylvain White, Jean-Charles Levy, Clement Miserez, Kevin DeWalt and Scott Mednick, who tells the trade, “Julien has written a breathtaking thriller that is truly original, …
