Ethan Hawke Discusses Daybreakers

Like your vampire films with real bite? Daybreakers is a vampire movie in which the fanged ones actually drink human blood, aren't all romanticized, and don't glitter in the sunlight. Written and directed by Michael and Peter Spierig - the filmmaking team behind 2003's Undead - Daybreakers is an R-rated violent vampire film starring Ethan Hawke as a vampire hematologist working on a substitute for human blood. Humans have become scarce now that vampires rule the planet, and Hawke needs to find a new source of blood before his kind completely run out of food.

Hawke's hoping Daybreakers finds an audience thirsty for a vampire film not meant for teens. Lionsgate picked up the script back in 2004, and filming took place on Daybreakers in 2007 - before vampires became the new in thing. Read On...

Leap Year Movie Review

Let's think positively about this. We've gotten the first disappointing romantic comedy of the year out of the way, and we're only one week into 2010. That's a good thing, right? Because, unfortunately, as charismatic and talented as Amy Adams and Matthew Goode are - and as good as their chemistry is onscreen in Leap Year - the two are unable to breathe much life into this tired story. Leap Year doesn't last for 366 days, but it sure feels longer than its 101 minute running time. Read On... Movie Review: Leap Year More on Leap Year:

Taylor Lautner to Star in Northern Lights

7 January 2010 3:32 PM, PST

Taylor Lautner is not only one of the most popular teen actors working in Hollywood today, he's also just become the best paid teen actor around. Lautner's just signed on to star in Northern Lights for Irish director John Moore (The Omen remake, Max Payne), and he'll be earning an incredible $7+ million (according to Nikki Finke) for tackling the role of a pilot in the action film.

Tom Cruise was at one point attached to the film which follows four young pilots who compete in extreme flying contests, but is no longer involved in the project. Lautner's three young co-stars haven't been disclosed yet, however we should be hearing casting news soon as production is scheduled to begin in April. Read On...

7 January 2010 8:49 AM, PST

The Directors Guild of America (DGA) announced its nominations today, and all of their choices are likely to go on to earn Best Director Oscar nominations. Unless, and this would be a huge upset, Clint Eastwood (for Invictus) makes his way onto the Academy's list, kicking out one of the DGA's choices. Or the Coen Brothers do so for their work on A Serious Man, which wouldn't be as much of an upset as Eastwood's inclusion. Read On...

Matthew Goode Discusses Leap Year

7 January 2010 3:45 AM, PST

Matthew Goode plays Colin Firth's partner who passes away after a tragic accident in 2009's A Single Man, a heavy film and one that Goode's particularly good in. But with his first film outing of 2010, the romantic comedy Leap Year, Goode goes for much lighter fare. Goode stars as Declan, an Irish bar owner/part-time cab driver who agrees to help out a pretty American (Amy Adams) trying to meet up with her boyfriend who's in Ireland on business. At first it's strictly a business arrangement, but slowly Declan falls for this feisty, high-maintenance traveler. Read On...

Comedies remain big sellers at the box office and studios have picked up on the fact that if they want to bring in audiences, they need to put out a batch of quality funny films. They don't have to star major names (see The Hangover), but they can't just be throw-aways. Here's hoping that among the 2010 crop of comedy films, there are more diamonds than plain old lumps of coal.

Anna Kendrick Joins Cancer Film

5 January 2010 6:04 PM, PST

Good for Anna Kendrick. The 24 year old actress burst onto the scene in 2007's Rocket Science, followed that up with a supporting role as one of the human classmates of Bella (Kristen Stewart) in Twilight and New Moon, and could possibly be earning an Oscar nomination for her performance in Jason Reitman's Up in the Air. She'll next be seen in Scott Pilgrim vs the World hitting theaters later this year. Yes, her career has really taken off. And now word comes, via The Hollywood Reporter, that she's signed on to star in Mandate Pictures' cancer comedy/drama (which may or may not be called I'm with Cancer) alongside Seth Rogen and James McAvoy. Sam Mendes to Direct Bond 23

5 January 2010 10:31 AM, PST

Sam Mendes is ready to have a crack at directing a Bond movie, so says The Hollywood Reporter. THR broke the news Mendes is negotiations to helm Bond 23 (hope they don't keep us waiting long for the real title). Mendes' last film, Away We Go, came and went without much notice, yet overall he has a pretty good track record. American Beauty, Road to Perdition, and Jarhead did well, he hit a bump in the road with Revolutionary Road, and Away We Go never really caught on. And of those, only Jarhead had any real action in it. But Marc Forster, director of Quantum of Solace, didn't have a filmography loaded with big-budget action films either before directing the action-packed 22nd film of the series. Read On...

Producers Guild Announces Movie Award Nominees

5 January 2010 4:47 AM, PST

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences changed the landscape by upping the number of nominees in the Best Picture race from five to 10, and the Producers Guild of America followed suit, changing the number of nominees for their annual Producer of the Year Award also to 10. Normally, the PGA winner goes on to net the Oscar for the year's best film. Last year's winner, Slumdog Millionaire, walked off with the Academy Award for Best Picture, as did 12 other PGA winners over the past 20 years. But with the expanded field this year, all bets are off.

This year's batch of PGA nominees include many of the usual suspects, but their top 10 list also has a couple of surprises. Which films made the cut? Michael Cera is a Youth in Revolt

5 January 2010 1:00 AM, PST

21 year old Michael Cera is so good at playing teens struggling to deal with life that it'll be a shame when the baby-faced actor grows out of such roles. His latest entry in the coming-of-age genre, Youth in Revolt - based on C. D. Payne's bestselling book Youth in Revolt: The Journals of Nick Twisp - finds the Canadian actor taking on two parts. First, he's Nick, an intelligent 16 year old virgin whose tastes in art and literature do not match those of his peers. Falling for the beautiful Sheeni Saunders (Portia Doubleday), Nick knows he has to change things up in order to win her over and make her cut loose her obnoxious boyfriend. So, what does he do? Nick comes up with an alter ego: Francois Dillinger. Cera's second character, Francois, is everything Nick's not. He's bold, unpredictable, rebellious and much more confidant than Nick. Using this alter ego, »

Amy Adams Talks About Leap Year

4 January 2010 3:55 AM, PST

Amy Adams' career is red hot, coming off of an Oscar-nominated turn in Doubt and starring roles in 2009 hits Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian and Julie & Julia. And now she's starting off 2010 with a bang, playing opposite Matthew Goode (Watchmen, A Single Man) in the romantic comedy Leap Year.

Adams stars as Anna, a bright young woman who decides to take matters into her own hands when her long-time boyfriend (played by Adam Scott) fails to pop the question in a timely manner. Following him to Dublin, Anna is determined to ask him to marry her. There's apparently an old Irish tradition that states women are allowed to propose to men on leap day, and that's what Anna is ready to do. Unfortunately, her travel plans get totally screwed up and she's forced into asking a bar owner/cab driver (Goode) who's hard up for money »
