Sci Fi to Syfy: Syfy Has Its Best Year Ever

When Dave Howe stepped up to the plate at Sci Fi, took the reigns of the network and started heading them towards their new future, he wanted to expand on the number of markets the network was in, which included the youth market (demographic). Howe was also concerned with replacing their flagship television series, Battlestar Galactica & expanding on Ghost Hunters.

As Syfy rebranded itself, it also took the high road to trying to create improved quality content for the channel. In the fracas of it all, they “repainted” the familiar fun that was Stargate and created Stargate Universe – much to the angst of the core Stargate fans.

In most cases their approach seems to be working… But as with any TV network change, some fans will get left behind as that network attempts to improve or change their overall number of viewers.

First, the Numbers:

The network needs to make money to survive. »

‘Doctor Who: The End of Time’ Review & Discussion [Updated]

With the holiday season upon us, now is the time to sit back, relax and enjoy the company of your loved ones. Although, if you’re the part of the world where snow is common (like myself), you’re already sick of the white devil powder that covers everything. Fortunately, we’ve got more important things to worry about. What’s so important, you ask? Well, it’s just The End Of Time.

Not only the end of time, but also the end of an era. Since the 2005 return of Doctor Who, we’ve been blessed with two wonderful actors portraying the Doctor, Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant. It’s been over 4 years since we said goodbye to Eccleston and now the time is upon us again.

Time to say goodbye to David Tennant.

[Update: This will cover “Doctor Who: The End of Time” (Part 2).]

New Toy Story 3 Featurette Reveals Mr. Pricklepants

We learned a few months back that former James Bond actor, Timothy Dalton, is voicing a new character in Pixar’s upcoming sequel, Toy Story 3. The character is called Mr. Pricklepants, a hedgehog who’s described to have “thespian tendencies,” which makes Dalton a great choice for the role (on top of the fact he has a brilliantly distinctive voice).

Those lucky enough to be in the room for the Disney’s D23 event earlier this year got a look at Mr. Pricklepants, along with the first full-length Toy Story 3 trailer. But we now have a new featurette (which premiered on the Disney Channel) featuring director Lee Unkrich and gives us our first official look at the character. Other than that, it doesn’t give much else away that we haven’t seen before in other trailers and clips, but for any fans of Toy Story and Pixar »

Sam Worthington Squashes Flash Gordon Rumor

Sam Worthington’s named popped up yet again for the starring role in another major film project but unsurpringly, he has denied the rumor himself in an e-mail to Harry at Ain’t It Cool News.

As mentioned in our discussion of the Sam Worthington/Ryan Reynolds rumor for the lead role of the Flash Gordon remake, it doesn’t mean much to see Sam or Ryan’s names mentioned for a role like this as they will be listed as candidates for every major leading role.

This particular part however, like the Captain America rumors, had some displeased at the idea of having non-American actors playing iconic American characters.  To me, that’s not too much of a big deal and getting an actor who can look and play the part the best is of most importance, no matter their origins.

Kevin Feige Talks 10 Years of Marvel Movies

31 December 2009 11:27 AM, PST

As the first decade of the new millennium comes to an end, we look back at the era that saw our favorite comic book heroes from the house of Stan Lee making the leap from the page to the silver screen.

To bring us a first-hand perspective of the Marvel movie experience, President of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige recounted the hard work and big payoffs that catapulted Marvel (and comic book movies on the whole) to the cinematic power horse it is today.

I’ve taken the liberty of cutting down Feige’s quotes to Marvel News down into some smaller snippets that should help spark fond feelings of comic book movie nostalgia:

Trying to Break the “Marvel Curse”

I started at Marvel proper in August 2000; I had been working as an associate producer on “X-Men” in 1998. We worked on that for almost three years. Back in those days there was the “Marvel Curse. »

Wolfman Official Site Launches

31 December 2009 8:08 AM, PST

An official site for Universal’s The Wolfman has launched in preparation for the film’s debut in theaters early next year. The site is pretty much the standard fare you’d expect for a film like this: flashy flash player pictures, a bit of music from the film’s score, a replay of the trailer, etc…

If you’re interested, keep reading to see what kind of fluff extra content the studio has up on the site to get you interested in The Wolfman.

So what kind of content would you expect from a Wolfman site? Why, a history of werewolf mythology, of course!

On the site you can delve into the both the historical and cinematic history of “lycanthropy,” which is the technical term for the werewolf (disease? curse?).  The “history” covers both the types of lycanthropy that one can be infected with (either bitten or cursed), facts »

Sr Pick [Video]: The Dark Knight is Confused Rap

31 December 2009 4:19 AM, PST

The popular Barely Political channel on YouTube has a series of hilarious parody videos about geek culture, pop culture and internet celebrities. In their Key of Awesome series -- which regularly garners over a hundred thousand views, sometimes in the millions -- they put up an awesome music video which pokes fun at the biggest comic book movie of all time: The Dark Knight.

The episode is titled “The Dark Knight is Confused” and stars Batman himself alongside Alfred and The Joker with a funny intro from Commissioner Gordon and his son. This is a must-watch; Batman’s beginning to wonder if his movie makes sense…

Key of Awesome episode #8:

I laughed out loud a few times while watching this and I applaud the folks at Barely Political for their creativity and work put in this and the other videos they have up. And much respect to Mark Douglas »

Sr Pick: Cool Illustrated Disney/Marvel Mash-Up

31 December 2009 3:49 AM, PST

One of the biggest stories of 2009 came our way back in August when Walt Disney announced it was acquring Marvel. Immediately after the story broke, we put together a comprehensive report on what the merger meant for our favorite superheroes and comic book icons.

While there was some initial fear that Disney might try to sanitize the darker content from Marvel’s properties, we (along with most of you readers) ultimately came to the agreement that Disney wouldn’t try to fix what wasn’t broken, and that the merger would be a great thing for Marvel and a good thing for comic-inspired movies overall.

Of course, after we dissected the nitty gritty business details and the potential ramifications of the acquisition, we spent some time sharing the fun stuff, like these amusing new takes on classic Disney and Marvel characters and this hilarious musical edition of “I’m a Marvel… »

Jeremy Renner Claims “No Truth” In Hawkeye Rumors

30 December 2009 5:51 PM, PST

The Hurt Locker is one of the best movies of 2009 and its star, Jeremy Renner, has a bright future ahead of him. For us comic book movie fans, we hope that future involves Renner taking on the role of Hawkeye in some of the upcoming films by Marvel Studios.

Last month, the rumor of Renner playing Hawkeye made headlines everywhere following the glowingly positive reception of his performance in The Hurt Locker and an interview with Empire where the actor revealed that he went in to talk to Marvel about Captain America but instead ended up talking the character of Hawkeye. Nothing official came of it (that we know of) but if were to happen, he said that the character would likely appear in Thor and that he’d be honored to be looked at for franchise role such as this.

With this match made in Heaven, many thought it had to be the case. »

Deciphering Chris Nolan’s ‘Inception’

30 December 2009 3:36 PM, PST

So the first trailer for Christopher Nolan’s Inception recently appeared online, but I’m still hearing some people say that if the trailer wasn’t stamped with “from the director of The Dark Knight” they would have little motivation to actually care about the movie.

Now granted, Inception has maintained an air of almost total mystery every since we first learned of its existence, but with the clues that have been carefully sprinkled here and there, we here at Screen Rant think there’s enough potential for this to be a breakout film in 2010. We’ll explain why, with some hi-res photos helping to paint the picture (click on any still image below for a hi-res version).

So let’s take a crack at the most obvious question – What is Inception all about?

In past coverage of the movie, we’ve learned that Leonardo DiCaprio stars as “a CEO »

The Top 10 Movie Moments of 2009

30 December 2009 12:57 PM, PST

Every site you go to these days has a list of their top 10 best movies of the year. But how many time can you look at slight variations of the same lists you only semi-agree with?

Besides, ranking entire movies is a big job. After much debate on the subject, we here at Screen Rant have decided that, in the end, a year in movies is perhaps best defined by specific movie moments that are now and forever burned into our collective memory.

So, without further ado, here are our picks for those 2009 movie moments which audiences collectively remember as being unforgettably awesome, hilarious, moving, inspiring or are otherwise just plain enjoyable…

(By the way, there will be some spoilers in the items below since all the movies in this list have been out for a while.)

James McAvoy To Play James Bond Creator, Ian Fleming?

30 December 2009 7:49 AM, PST

In the vein of Sam Worthington and Ryan Reynolds, Wanted star James McAvoy is one in-demand actor. Adding to the list of projects he’s attached to – beyond Wanted 2 and I’m with Cancer – we now get word that McAvoy is attached to a biopic of James Bond creator, Ian Fleming.

Pajiba provides us with the story they’ve gotten from their source, The Hollywood Cog. The project, currently being referred to as simply Ian Fleming, is being developed by both Palmstar Entertainment and Animus Films. McAvoy is attached to the lead role, and the film will reportedly focus specifically on the years of Fleming’s life in which he got the inspiration to create the James Bond character.

Fleming’s life is prime material for a biopic: Years before creating Bond, Fleming struggled under the shadow of his family name (his father was a member of parliament, and »

Ghostbusters 3 To Shoot Next Year for 2011 Release?

30 December 2009 6:56 AM, PST

For literally years now (even stretching as far back as 1989) we’ve heard word of a Ghostbusters 3, with quotes of “maybes” and “mights” chiefly coming from Harold Ramis and Dan Akroyd, the director and star of the first two movies. But there’s so much of those vague speculative statements that it seems we can’t really trust anything that comes out about the film, even if it comes straight from the key players involved.

The last piece of speculation we posted about Ghostbusters 3 didn’t come from the usual suspects, but rather from one of the first two film’s other stars, Sigourney Weaver. While doing the rounds promoting Avatar, questions inevitably turned to the third Ghostbusters and she said that she’s had calls asking if she’ll read the script (leading her to think she’ll be involved) and also that Bill Murray might be back but as a ghost. »

Behind-The-Scenes Photos of The Last Airbender

30 December 2009 4:27 AM, PST

One of my most anticipated films of 2010 is what I’m hoping will be the career-path-correcting project by M. Night Shyamalan is The Last Airbender. Shyamalan’s had a rocky track record in recent years with his latest original films not doing well amongst fans, critics or the box office but he looks to rectify that with his first go at adapting an established property.

We’ve not seen much on the film recently but we were initially hopeful of the full trailer debut for Christmas. That was of course delayed due to Ilm shots needing completion so we’re tentatively set to see the trailer release in February.

The latest issue of Empire Magazine features some cool new photos from the set of The Last Airbender and /Film put up some scans that a reader sent in from the mag.

Sci-Fi/Horror Comic ‘Night & Fog’ Adaptation Coming

30 December 2009 3:56 AM, PST

According to Variety, producers Gil Adler and Shane McCarthy are planning to bring the World War II-themed Sci-Fi/Horror comic Night & Fog to the big screen. Previously, Adler served as a producer on other well known comic-book movies, including the horror/action film Constantine and the widely heralded (yet ultimately disappointing) Superman Returns. Variety points out that Adler is also producing Dead of Night, which stars Brandon Routh and is based on the popular 1980’s Italian comic book, Dylan Dog.

While I haven’t read Night & Fog myself, the premise of the comic sounds interesting. Quoting from the Variety article:

“[Night & Fog] revolves around an infectious mist unleashed on a military base that transforms its victims into preternatural creatures of the night. But when the survivors try to kill them, they adapt and change into something even more horrific and unstoppable.”

The description of Night & Fog reminds me somewhat of John Carpenter’s The Thing, »

Top Pirated Movies of 2009 & Other Top 10’s

30 December 2009 3:49 AM, PST

Remember the big debacle with the Wolverine piracy stunt?  It stirred quite the debate across the net between classic respectful consumers vs the modern-day internet consumer with the oddest of excuses for what is known as stealing.  But then the movie still made its money.  They all make their money no matter what pranks people pull.

Me, in case you didn’t know…  I actually pay for the products I use.  It’s the old fashion thing to do!

But what of pirated movies?  Was there a more popular movie to steal than Wolverine? There certainly was and we have the list of the top 10 most pirates movies of the year along with top 10 lists for total domestic box office earnings and top DVD sales.

The most pirated movie out there was J.J. AbramsStar Trek, edging out Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen with almost 11 million illegal downloads. The 3rd »

Check Out Aaron Eckhart in Battle: Los Angeles

29 December 2009 8:09 PM, PST

I like Aaron Eckhart and I’m actually looking forward to his next movie where he leads a platoon of Marines against… aliens! How can that not be good? The film is called Battle: Los Angeles and the title says it all (except the aliens part).

Ekchart was cast as the lead back in November of 2008, following the success of The Dark Knight and this summer, it was announced that Michelle Rodriguez, Michael Pena and Bridget Moynahan would be joining the fight as well, alongside Ramon Rodriguez (TF2: Revenge of the Fallen) and R&B singer–songwriter/record producer/actor, Ne-Yo.

Two new photos surfaced over the holidays for the sci-fi action flick; one depicting Eckhart in battle attire and the other of an explosion.

Star Trek Sequel To Start Pre-Production Late 2010 (Or Not)

29 December 2009 6:35 PM, PST

Like our friends over at First Showing, this little snippet of news/info kind of slipped past us over the Christmas break, but we thought it was worth sharing with you: In an interview with MTV last week, actress Zoe Saldana spoke about the movies she has upcoming in 2010, and one of the movies highlighted in its own segment was “A Star Trek Sequel.”

It was a kind of off-the-cuff remark when Saldana let loose the info that she believes that the Star Trek sequel (Star Trek 2?) will go into pre-production around this time next year. Here’s the quote from MTV by Saldana herself:

“I spoke to J.J. and Bryan Burk, his producing partner at Bad Robot, and they are still in the middle of building the script with Alex Kurtzman and Bob Orci, and we’ll probably be going into pre-production around this time next year. »

Sam Worthington vs. Ryan Reynolds for Flash Gordon?

29 December 2009 5:07 PM, PST

News on a new Flash Gordon movie has been scarce and we’ve not heard of any official developments since nearly a year and a half ago when Neil Moritz acquired the rights to the film and Breck Eisner was picked to direct. That changes this week as rumors surface of who is being looked at to play the lead role. Hollyscoop is reporting that an insider of theirs informed them that Sam Worthington and Ryan Reynolds are up for the role of Flash against two others.

For those unfamiliar with the classic sci-fi tale, the story of Flash Gordon takes place when our planet is hit with a meteor strike. We find out through the story that these meteors are weapons from the planet Mongo sent by Ming the Merciless, their evil ruler. Flash Gordon and friends make their way to the planet and adventure ensues.
