Girls on Film: Domestic Violence and Media

3 hours ago | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Only a few years ago, Evan Rachel Wood was Lolita'd up, wearing heart-shaped glasses and having super-sexy sex on-tape with Marilyn Manson. It was one apt metaphor for a relationship between a couple with an eighteen-year age difference. Fast-forward to the present, and Wood has moved on, leaving Manson to do what he does best -- lather in controversial thoughts and stretch every boundary and opinion of decency. But this time, it's taken a new turn. His new video "Running to the Edge of the World" watches him sing with a tortured look in his eyes for a good four minutes before twisting into a domestic violence fest, a girl looking like Wood's doppelganger getting the living crap beat out of her and then looking around, scared, with blood dripping all over her.

Superproducer Hired To Salvage Spider-man Musical

11 hours ago | WENN | See recent WENN news »

A rock producer who has worked with the Rolling Stones and U2 has been drafted in to rescue the troubled Spider-man musical.

Work on the multimillion dollar Broadway production - which has been scored by the Irish rock giants - was delayed this year, amid rumours of financial difficulties and spiralling costs.

But Michael Cohl announced over the weekend (07-08Nov09) he had signed up to take over the production and ensure it debuts in 2010 as planned.

Cohl also confirmed relative unknown Reeve Carney had been cast in the lead role as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, joining Evan Rachel Wood and Alan Cumming in the show's cast.

It's unknown if Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark will be ready to preview on 25 February as originally planned, or make the Tony Awards deadline of 29 April, but Cohl claims he is "very close to having in place the financing that we need and getting everyone back to work on the musical".

Spider-Man is expected to become the most expensive Broadway musical ever, costing an estimated $50 million (£31.35 million). »

Another Superhero Reeve As Carney Lands Spider-man Role

8 November 2009 3:06 PM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Little-known actor Reeve Carney has landed Broadway's most-anticipated new role - as Spider-man.

The young star, who also fronts rockers Carney, has beaten thousands of hopefuls to land the role of Peter Parker and his superhero alter-ego in mega-budget musical Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark.

He'll join Evan Rachel Wood and Alan Cumming, who have already signed on for Julie Taymor's ambitious project, which has been scored by U2 stars Bono and The Edge.

Carney's biggest role to date came in 1999 film Snow Falling on Cedars, in which he played Ethan Hawke's character Ishmael as a child.

Director Taymor asked the 26 year old to try out for Spider-Man after impressing her on the set of her new film The Tempest.

The Spider-Man musical will open at the Hilton Theatre in New York next spring. A set date for the run has yet to be announced. »

Director Julie Taymor Unveils Broadway's Spider-Man

6 November 2009 11:06 PM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

It will not be Jim Sturgess slinging webs on Broadway in the new comic book musical Spider-Man Turn of the Dark. Instead, director Julie Taymor (Across the Universe) has hired another young actor she recently cast in a film version of Shakespeare's The Tempest. Reeve Carney will play Peter Parker to Evan Rachel Wood's Mary Jane Watson, and here's a look at the 26-year-old actor.

In addition to acting, Carney is the lead singer of a band that features his last name, and is the final piece of the puzzle to the 2010 Marvel musical, which will open at the Hilton Theatre in New York in a few months. “Having recently finished shooting The Tempest with Reeve as the young prince, I am thrilled to cast him in an entirely different role as Peter Parker in Spider-Man," Taymor said in a statement.

"When I first saw Reeve, he was performing with his terrific band Carney. »

Bono’s troubled Broadway musical 'Spider-Man' has been saved! (IrishCentral)

6 November 2009 12:30 PM, PST | IrishCentral | See recent IrishCentral news »

Spider-Man’s been saved! That's the word from an inside source on the troubled Broadway musical which features music from Bono and The Edge. “Spider-Man, Turn Off The Dark” was originally set to preview at the Hilton Theater on February 25, 2010 and open in March, but production was stalled for nearly a month by financial difficulties. The show’s budget is reported to have soared to $52 million, in part because of theater renovations, and will cost about $1 million per week to produce, which is hundreds of thousands of dollars more than other elaborate Broadway shows such as “West Side Story.” However, our sources tell us that producers have met with Tony winning director Julie Taymor and other members of the creative team, and a deal has been reached to cover the estimated $24 million in budget overrun. “Spider-Man’s” opening date is expected to put pushed back to spring 2010. 'Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark' Musical Casts Peter Parker And Lead Villain Amid More Troubles

6 November 2009 11:31 AM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

The production of the upcoming Broadway musical “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” continues to spin a tangled web. Sources close to the producers claim that the budget has soared to $52 million—more than twice the cost of the “Lord of the Rings” musical which debuted in 2006 as one of the most expensive musicals ever – and at least $24 million is still needed to get the show off the ground.

According to The L.A. Times, if “Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark” doesn't premiere by the end of April, the license from Marvel will expire in addition to missing the deadline to enter next year’s Tony Awards.

Despite the continuing financial peril, U2 bandmates Bono and the Edge—who collaborated on the songs for “Spider-Man”—insist that the show will still happen. "The visuals and the music are amazing, and that's what will matter," said Bono.

Toby Kebbell to Play John Wilkes Booth in The Conspirator

4 November 2009 3:57 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Our friends over at First Showing got an interesting little scoop this afternoon, picking up some casting news from Robert Redford's upcoming Lincoln assassination film The Conspirator. A friend of Fs' Alex Billington ran into RocknRolla star Toby Kebbell, who said that he was in town to work on The Conspirator and that he's playing John Wilkes Booth. For those who missed 6th grade history, Booth was the man that pulled the trigger on President Abraham Lincoln in Box 7 at Ford's Theatre on April 14, 1865. If this turns out to be true (all signs point to yes, as it's first hand), Kebbell completes a cast that includes James McAvoy, Robin Wright Penn, Frederick Aiken, Justin Long, Evan Rachel Wood, Alexis Bledel, Kevin Kline, and Tom Wilkinson. The film will follow the story of Mary Surratt (Wright Penn), the lone female charged as a co-conspirator in the assassination. "As the whole nation turns against her, she »

Kristin Bauer could play the next lesbian vampire on "True Blood"

3 November 2009 7:00 AM, PST | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

Last week, True Blood creator Alan Ball talked with The Advocate about future gay characters on the hit HBO series. The show has already featured a handful of queer characters, including Vampire Queen Sophie-Ann (Evan Rachel Wood, her lover Hadley (Lindsey Haun), the fabulous fry cook/drug dealer Lafayette and season 1's Eddie.

Ball said:

We'll be meeting the vampire king of Mississippi and his long, long-term companion — and by long-term I mean really long-term — Talbot. I think Lafayette may meet a love interest, and certainly Pam, who works with Eric, she's certainly got a lesbian vibe — I don't know that that's all she is, but she certainly does seem to appreciate the women.

Pam is played by Kristin Bauer, who serves as Eric's wingwoman at the vampire bar, Fangtasia. Her interests included fancy pumps, showing no mercy and now, apparently, the bar maid, Ginger.

Oscar voters get three more DVDs: 'Coco Before Chanel,' 'Damned United,' 'Whatever Works'

30 October 2009 8:45 AM, PDT | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

On Thursday, Oscar voters received the second, third and fourth DVD screeners sent to the full academy — all three from Sony Pictures Classics, which thus becomes the first major studio out of the gate: "Coco Before Chanel," "The Damned United" and "Whatever Works." Other Spc screeners ("An Education," "The Last Station," "Broken Embraces," "White Ribbon") will be sent later in derby season, a studio rep promises. "A Prophet" is eligible only in the race for best foreign-language film, which requires theatrical screenings, so DVDs of that will not be shipped. The only previous DVD sent to all academy members was "Anvil! The Story of Anvil." Some bloggers reported that "The Messenger" was also sent, but that's not true. At least not yet. It was sent to journalists, but a copy won't be shipped to academy members for another week or so. Economic hard times may severely limit the number of »

Blu-Ray Review: ‘Whatever Works’ Coasts on Worn Formula

28 October 2009 7:58 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – There was a time when a Woody Allen film starring Larry David would have been an obvious slam dunk. Both men have created comic personas so vivid and indelible that it’s hard for viewers to pinpoint the line separating “performance” from “personality.” They have mastered the art of neurotic kvetching, though their similarities are skin-deep at best. While Allen’s persona has exuded a Chaplinesque charm since the early days of “Bananas,” David’s is aggressively misanthropic, as his monstrously petty obsessiveness digs him into one hole after another in the uproarious HBO series “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” “Whatever Works” marks the first time these two comic titans have forged a close collaboration, and that’s why the film is ultimately one of the year’s most heartbreaking disappointments.

'Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark' Delayed Again?

27 October 2009 11:48 AM, PDT | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

The beleaguered production of the Broadway musical “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” has reportedly been pushed back to next spring.

According to The New York Times, the later-than-expected start is indeed due to the widely reported production shutdown on the project and continuing efforts to recruit new investors to come onboard the multimillion-dollar project.

Earlier this month, reports emerged that the production of “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” was back on track thanks to two new investors, Jim Stern and Norton Herrick. However, Stern told MTV News that word of his involvement was premature at best.

“Yeah, I think that it would be good if people would actually talk to me before they write that sort of thing," Stern said. "It's not really—I mean, I don't know. Whether I'm involved in it or not, I don't have any idea yet."
