In the 1992 Summer Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain, she won two gold medals as a swimmer in the 200 meter butterfly and 4x100 meter medley relay, a silver in the 200 meter individual medley and a bronze in the 400 meter individual medley.
Parents Bob and Barbara are the leading inspiration for her book "Champions Are Raised, Not Born."
One elder brother, Trevor, with whom she has "an excellent relationship, even by brother-and-sister standards." In fact, Summer credits him with inspiring her to take up competitive swimming when they were both children.
