'Monk' is gone, but he left a legacy

4 December 2009 4:31 PM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

"Monk" works his last case Friday night, ending an eight-season run that put Tony Shalhoub's obsessive-compulsive detective into the pantheon of quirky TV gumshoes.

"Monk" was never an especially challenging show, which was one of its charms. You knew going into an episode that Shalhoub's character would likely be grossed out by some unpleasant aspect of a crime scene, that his keenly honed observational powers would help him see things no one else could and that by the end of the hour, those things would come together to catch the perpetrator.

What has kept the show entertaining for so long is its strong investment in character. Creator Andy Breckman and the show's writers have kept an admirably light hand on things over the years -- further adding to the show's comfort-food vibe -- but they've also given supporting actors Traylor Howard, Ted Levine and Jason Gray-Stanford enough material to »

TV's 'House' to Become PC Game

4 December 2009 12:47 AM, PST | Reel Empire | See recent Reel Empire news »

Legacy Interactive plans to launch a game based on Fox's top-rated medical drama "House, M.D." according to reports. The House, M.D. game will let fans of the show step into the sneakers of the gruff diagnostician, played by British actor Hugh Laurie. Players will help solve five different medical mysteries with more than 100 puzzles and minigames. As on TV, House will have help from his supporting team of doctors, as well as his favored colleague/enabler Wilson (Robert Sean Leonard) and hospital administrator Cuddy (Lisa Edelstein). It is unclear if the actors will lend their voices to the game, but early images show at least their likenesses will appear in it according to Gamespot. House, M.D. will arrive on the PC and Macintosh in February, with a DS edition to arrive in April.

Coraline Leads 37th Annual Annie Award Nominees

2 December 2009 9:28 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Following yesterday's Independent Spirit Award Nominations [1], The Annie Awards have also revealed their full list of nominees for this year. This is the annual award ceremony for the International Animated Film Association, celebrating animation in all of its forms. Sometimes these awards can help predict what movie will win the Best Animated Feature at the Oscars, although it's not always entirely reliable (last year Kung Fu Panda swept Wall-e [2] in every category). As we discussed on this week's podcast [3], it's shaping up to be a pretty tight race for Best Animated Feature this year, and if the Annies are any indication, it looks like Henry Selick's Coraline may have the edge. It was nominated for a total of 10 Annie Awards, including Best Animated Feature, Character Design, Voice Acting, and Music. Check out the list of nominees in all the feature-length categories after the jump. Best Animated Feature Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs »

Princess & The Frog And Prep & Landing Lead Annie Awards Nominations

1 December 2009 2:06 PM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Disney animators are back on top of the cartoon world after dominating nominations for the 37th annual Annie Awards.

The family film studio's The Princess & the Frog landed eight nods and upcoming festive TV special Prep & Landing claimed nine in the TV awards categories.

The Princess & the Frog will compete with Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, Coraline, Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Secret of Kells and Up for the Annie Awards' top honour, Best Film, while The Simpsons will be the major competition for Prep & Landing in the Best Animated TV Production category.

The coveted Best Animated Television Production for Children prize will be fought for by Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, SpongeBob Squarepants, The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack, The Mighty B! and The Penguins of Madagascar.

Wes Anderson (Fantastic Mr. Fox), Pete Docter (Up), Christopher Miller and Phil Lord (Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs), Hayao Miyazaki (Ponyo) and Henry Selick (Coraline) will compete for the Best Director award. Anderson and writing partner Noah Baumbach are also favourites to land the writing award for Fantastic Mr. Fox.

Meanwhile, John Leguizamo (Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaur), Dawn French (Coraline), Hugh Laurie (Monsters Vs. Aliens), Jennifer Lewis and Jen Cody (both The Princess & the Frog) are the nominees for the Voice Acting in a Feature Production category.

The Annie Awards will be presented by the International Animated Film Society at Royce Hall at UCLA in Los Angeles in February. »

'Coraline' Tops the List with Ten Annie Award Nominations

1 December 2009 11:29 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

The nominees for the 2010 Annie Awards were also announced today and Focus Features' Coraline topped the list of feature nominees with 10 with Pixar's Up following with 9 and Disney's Princess and the Frog scoring 8. All three films were included in the running for Best Animated feature along with Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, The Secret of Kells and Fantastic Mr. Fox.

Last year the Annie Awards came under some scrutiny as Kung Fu Panda blanked the soon-to-be Oscar winner Wall-e. The reason for the uproar being DreamWorks was one of the org's top sponsors (which they still are). This year Monsters vs. Aliens is the only DreamWorks Animated feature making any noise (4 nominations), but it looks like Sony Pictures Animation has bumped up their contributions to become a "Gold Sponsor". Will there again be uproar if Pixar's Up doesn't walk away with the top prizes or Disney's The Princess and the Frog. »

Annie Awards Kiss The Princess and the Frog, Up and, Uh, Hugh Laurie

1 December 2009 9:15 AM, PST | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

Hugh Laurie and cranky doctoring is apparently a winning combination, no matter what the genre or screen size. Need proof? Dr. House's alter ego is up for a 'toon-honoring Annie Award this year, for voicing Dr. Cockroach in DreamWorks' Monsters vs. Aliens. He'll be facing off with Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaur's John Leguizamo, Coraline comic Dawn French (both up for their voice talents), Fantastic Mr. Fox's Wes Anderson and Noah Baumbach (nominated together for their writing skills; Anderson scored a solo nod for Directing), and, it seems, anyone who had anything even remotely to do with The Princess and the Frog. 'House' recap: Dr. Wilson's war

1 December 2009 8:34 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

I wanted to love last night's House, and there were parts of it I really dug: Wilson is the most underused character on the show, and getting a whole episode devoted to Robert Sean Leonard was a real treat. But the plotting felt sort of off to me, so while it hit some true emotional notes, the path to that payoff didn't quite click. We opened on House's lack of house-guesting manners and the welcome thrill of hearing Hugh Laurie rock out on "Faith." Wilson was headed off to his annual hunting trip (Parks and Recreation shout out?) with a »

Interview: Robert Sean Leonard of Hugh Laurie’s ‘House M.D.’ on Self-Titled Episode ‘Wilson’

30 November 2009 11:44 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Robert Sean Leonard, who plays Dr. James Wilson on “House M.D.” (and the best friend of Golden Globe winner Hugh Laurie as Dr. Gregory House), describes himself as less than ambitious with his career and even “lazy” in an interview with HollywoodChicago.com’s presence. He’s also remembered for his role on “Dead Poet’s Society”.

Tonight’s self-titled episode “Wilson,” which is episode nine of season six, puts Robert Sean Leonard more in the spotlight than fans are used to seeing him. The episode, which airs on Nov. 30, 2009 at 8 p.m. Et/Pt on Fox, is an intense examination into Wilson’s world when it’s not involving House.

House M.D.” stars Hugh Laurie, Robert Sean Leonard, Lisa Edelstein, Omar Epps, Jennifer Morrison, Jesse Spencer and Olivia Wilde from creator David Shore. Tonight’s episode synopsis follows and then the Robert Sean Leonard interview follows thereafter.

Sneak Peek: Watch three minutes of tonight's House

30 November 2009 7:01 AM, PST | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

Ooh, the tables are turned in tonight's House, and Wilson is the one with the medical mystery on his hands. On a hunting trip, his buddy, played by The West Wing star Josh Malina, has a physical meltdown, and Wilson has to figure out what's going on.

Earlier this year, executive producer Katie Jacobs said, "We have this upcoming episode where House is to Wilson as Wilson is usually to House. Like he'll be in the middle of something and House will drop by, or he'll go see House in the middle of a differential diagnosis meeting, and we'll never even know what they were working on. I'm excited about it."

And, of course, I always love the episodes where Hugh Laurie gets to display his musical talents, even if it Is in a House-centric way. In fact, I'm loving House this season. How about you? Join in our spirited »

'House': Robert Sean Leonard takes center stage

29 November 2009 2:44 PM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

A lot of supporting actors on a TV series would jump at the chance to have an episode where they're the central focus.

"House's" Robert Sean Leonard, who plays the title character's (Hugh Laurie) colleague and best friend, Dr. James Wilson, is not one of those people.

"Oh, no, it's my worst nightmare. Are you kidding?" Leonard said during a conference call last week. "[When] I read 'House,' and Wilson was in about three scenes a show, I thought, This is perfect. You know, I'm the Carlton the Doorman of my show. I'm not the most ambitious guy. I like playing the best friend. It's good to be the lead of a show for a week, but I wouldn't spread it all around too much. I like my role the way it is."

Leonard is nonetheless stepping up in Monday's (Nov. 30) episode of "House," which is appropriately titled "Wilson." He »

Black Eye For Laurie

28 November 2009 6:11 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

House star Hugh Laurie is sporting a painful black eye after injuring himself in a boxing bout, according to U.K. reports.

The Brit actor is a big fan of the sport and practises regularly while he's in Los Angeles filming the medical drama.

But the 50 year old was punched in the face during a session earlier this week (ends27Nov09), reports Britain's Daily Mail newspaper - and he now is sporting a painful bruise and swelling around his eye.

Laurie laughed off his injury, joking, "I walked into a door... No, I mean I got hit by an owl." »

Lie to Me: Fox Gives Drama Full Season Order; Good or Great News?

27 November 2009 11:38 AM, PST | TVSeriesFinale.com | See recent TVSeriesFinale news »

Though its performance hasn't been stellar, Fox has finally ordered a full season of Lie to Me. What does this mean for the sophomore drama's future?

Lie to Me follows Dr. Cal Lightman (Tim Roth), a human lie detector, and his team of experts who help law officials solve their most difficult cases. The cast also includes Kelli Williams, Brendan Hines, Mekhi Phifer, and Monica Raymund.

The dramatic series is currently in a plum spot on the Fox schedule, sitting behind successful House on Monday nights. Unfortunately, it doesn't hold onto much of the Hugh Laurie show's audience. This past week, for example, House was first in the 18-49 demographic (4.6) and second in total viewers (11.95 million), opposite the Dancing with the Stars finals. Lie to Me shed 40% of the lead-in audience in both areas, attracting a 2.7 and 7.16 million. »

No hope for House (Hugh Laurie) and Cuddy (Lisa Edelstein) on House? What about Wilson (Robert Sean Leonard) and Cuddy?

A few days before the upcoming Wilson-centric episode on the Fox medical drama, Robert Sean Leonard revealed that he personally didn't think a romantic relationship between his character and Cuddy would work, but that can change with the upcoming episode. Although he does concede that Wilson might not enjoy being bossed around.

It took 'em long enough, but I suspect it's gonna prove worth the wait: House's keepers are giving Lisa Edelstein's Cuddy her own Very Special Episode, to air on Feb. 8. (That's two weeks before my birthday. Coincidence? I think not.) And in honor of, well, the honor, I got her on the horn yesterday to discuss exposing more than her character's emotions (nudity!), her unpopular love interest (Lucas!), the future of Huddy (her fingers are crossed!), and more. As always, on screen and off, she didn't disappoint. (Warning: Portions of the following Q&A are Nsfw.) As I understand it, »
