Anarchy from the UK: Top 5 UK Comic Strip Movies I’d Like to See

29 November 2009 12:21 PM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

British comics have not been well served in their Hollywood adaptations. Transatlantic transitions from page to screen result in either being too faithful, as Zack Synder’s Watchmen arguably was, or too loose with the essence of the source material, resulting in a genre bound snooze fest – Judge Dredd please stand up (and don’t remove your helmet!).

While the golden age of American comics have lit up the screen in this last decade, with visionary directors taking the basic elements of  these iconic characters to their own conclusions, British comics have not garnered such attention. Nolan’s Batman, Raimi’s Spiderman and the Supermen of Donner and Singer have their own unique identity; the depth of the mythology of these superheroes allows numerous interpretations, and some of the most interesting re-imaginings of our own myths and legends have occurred on the screen as well as on the page.

Ron Wants To Give 'The Princess and the Frog' A Big Ole Sloppy Kiss!

25 November 2009 12:01 AM, PST | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

I may seem overtly cynical and critical of today's movies, but it's only because I care about quality when it comes to shelling out a few clams for a film. There was a time, long before my fingers even touched a keyboard, where studios and producers were true showman and labored long and hard to craft memorable pieces of entertainment. There are many artisans today who hold the same ideals, but they are few and far between, often having their works lost in the sea of stories and premises recycled over and over again. We the audience should demand to get our money's worth and more, not shrug our shoulders and give a pass to movies that are barely decent compared to all the other crap. Even a powerhouse studio like Disney lost its way over the years long after the passing of its founder. They hit a great stride »

'The Princess And The Frog,' 'Me And Orson Welles' And 'The Private Lives Of Pippa Lee' In This Week's unLimited

It's another big holiday weekend with plenty of new releases to consider following your Thanksgiving feast this Thursday (and following your subsequent leftovers feasts through Sunday). In the same way that many Americans prefer alternatives to the traditional turkey and stuffing dinner on the day of gratitude, many moviegoers want something other than a studio tentpole release the day after Thanksgiving. Really, why would you want a popcorn movie when you're still full from the night before?

There are a couple of limited release options this week, including an important studio film getting a surprisingly soft opening, to appease such a film diet. Check these films out if you want something different as or additional to your main course this weekend:

"Me and Orson Welles"

What is is: Richard Linklater, director of "Dazed and Confused" and "School of Rock," returns with a fictionalized coming-of-age drama set during production of Orson Welles »

Exclusive Video: The Princess and the Frog Cast & Crew Featurette

23 November 2009 12:47 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Disney Animation had announced in 2004 that Home On The Range would be the studio's last 2D animated film entry to their pantheon of animated features, due in part to the extremely successful CGI Animated Pixar films. However, after the company's acquisition of Pixar in early 2006, Ed Catmull and John Lasseter, the new leaders of the animation department, decided to re-open the door to Disney's tradition of hand-drawn animation. Ron Clements and John Musker, directors of the very successful 2D Disney films The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Hercules, were brought in to write and direct Disney's first new, hand-drawn, family musical in almost five years, The Princess and the Frog, opening in theaters on November 25th. The film takes a slightly different look at the classic fairy tale, now set in turn-of-the-century New Orleans, featuring a multi-cultural cast and a Princess who also becomes a frog. Blu-Ray Review: Pixar’s HD Collection Continues With ‘Monsters, Inc.’

19 November 2009 2:49 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – As Disney/Pixar continues to release new films on Blu-Ray, they often “piggy-back” one title with another from their catalog, choosing to release Pete Docter’s first directorial effort for the company, “Monsters, Inc.” in HD on the same day that they release his new film, “Up”. In a beautiful 4-disc combo pack that includes Blu-Ray, DVD, and digital copies of the film, “Monsters, Inc.” continues the Pixar Blu-Ray tradition.

Blu-Ray Rating: 4.0/5.0

John Goodman and Billy Crystal star as the lovable-and-gigantic Sulley and his wisecracking sidekick Mike Wazowski, respectively. Sulley and Mike work for a scream-processing factory in Monstropolis known as “Monsters, Inc.” A little girl named Boo finds her way into the world, scaring the monsters in return, and it’s up to Sulley and Mike to restore order and get the wee one back home where she belongs.

Monsters, Inc. was released on Blu-Ray and DVD on November 10th, »

Monsters, Inc. Blu-ray Review

19 November 2009 9:05 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

I opined when it came to Up that it’s hard to judge the Pixar canon because there are so few missteps, but when it comes to favorites, everyone’s got to have one. You have to at some point think of which one you love the most. It’s not like they’re your children. Though a case can be made for almost every single one of their films, the one that gets me the hardest, and the one that always works me over like a sap is Monsters Inc. My review of it after the jump.

In the city of Monstropolis, their power supply comes from the screams of children, and no one is better at getting young children to freak out than James P. Sullivan (voiced by John Goodman). His best friend is Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal), who he lives with and also handles his prep. The »

6 Movie Clips and a Featurette from Walt Disney’s The Princess And The Frog

18 November 2009 11:45 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

“‘The Princess and the Frog’ is a return to the timeless world of hand-drawn animation at Disney. It’s an ageless fairy tale, but with a fresh twist that combines everything we look for in great stories: comedy, adventure, music-and most of all, the kind of heart that always sets Disney animation apart.”

~ John Lasseter, Executive Producer and Chief Creative Officer, Walt Disney Animation Studios

Opening on November 25th, in limited release, is Walt Disney’s return to 2D animation, The Princess and the Frog.  After years of focusing on computer animation, The House That Walt Built is returning to its roots and I couldn’t be more excited.  While I don’t know if The Princess and the Frog is going to be a classic like Aladdin or Beauty and the Beast, I know there is a place for traditional animation alongside what Pixar does so brilliantly with computers. »

[DVD Review] Monsters, Inc.

17 November 2009 3:02 PM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Monsters, Inc. has everything a Pixar movie should: an interesting take on a common story, fantastic animation, top-shelf acting and a sense of child-like wonder. Oh, and John Ratzenberger. Flipping the monster in the closet paradigm on its head, Monsters, Inc. takes the traditional idea and asks a question few consider “Why do they scare?” Many horror films waste countless frames of celluloid attempting to give a brief background or origin story to their ghoulies, but Monsters, Inc. upped the ante. Instead of a mere glimpse, they completely dive into the world of monsters and tell us a story about avarice and business ethics while still providing a film most kids will go ga-ga for.

James P. “Sulley” Sullivan (John Goodman) holds the record in Monstropolis for the most energy generated by scaring children. Contrary to the really simple conceptualization of monster-lives-in-closet, the monsters of Monstropolis have a genuinely genius method for reaching their targets. »

Moon opts to foot it towards Alaska (the Libertarian, survivalist and secessionist Mecca). It is not long before the local constable (Clint Howard) – who must have learned everything he knows about policing from Roscoe P. Coltrane – and his hound dog are hot on Moon’s trail. Monsters Inc. - Blu-ray Review

11 November 2009 4:27 AM, PST | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

Monsters Inc. scores on two fronts. It.s another excellent Blu-ray from Disney and it.s another classic film from Pixar. Pixar is obviously one of my favorite film production companies and Disney is certainly moving high on the list of best Blu-ray producers. The place is Monstropolis and it is run on fear. Most literally as the creatures that hide under children.s beds scaring those same kids produces energy that powers the city. Monsters Inc., the corporation responsible for gathering that energy, is run by Henry J. Waternoose (James Coburn) and the top scare producer in the factory is James .Sulley. Sullivan (John Goodman). He may look scary but he.s a loveable lug. His best friend is »

Although there is wild rumor of "Monsters, Inc. 2" being in development, Peter Docter has hinted that the film is currently not in the works. In a recent interview with New York Magazine, the director of "Monsters, Inc." who has been attached to make the sequel claimed he is not producing the said project.

"I'm not working on [it]," Docter stated when asked whether or not he has been focusing on "Monsters, Inc. 2" after finishing "Up". Instead, the helmer said he has another project which has been kept under wraps. "I'm working on something else, but I cannot announce what it is," he said.

News that "Monsters, Inc. 2" has been developed was first fueled by Peter Docter when stating that the filmmakers behind "Monsters, Inc." have some thought about the possible sequel. Though he did not give any detail of the story, the helmer has been reported being given the go-ahead by »

Plot: In the world of bedtime monsters, the screams of children are a valuable source of energy. At the same time, kids are also considered toxic beings. All heck breaks loose when an innocent child named Boo crosses into the monster world, causing two professional frighteners, Mike (Crystal) and Sully (Goodman), to do anything necessary to protect her and return her to her bedroom.

Who’S It For? The closet and under the bed may still be points of terrifying uncertainty for younger children, but the monsters in this film are nothing to stay away from. Young kids and very old kids alike will able to enjoy this funny and thoughtful film.

Blu-ray Review: Monsters, Inc. (4-Disc)

8 November 2009 10:32 PM, PST | BuzzFocus.com | See recent BuzzFocus.com news »

To coincide with the home video release of Up, Disney and Pixar have also given Pete Docter’s other feature-length directorial effort, Monsters, Inc., its first high-definition treatment with a four-disc Blu-ray/DVD combo set. Monsters, Inc. tells the story of the monsters who come out of the bedroom closet to scare children at night. At it turns out, the monsters are more scared of the children than the other way around. But a job’s a job for Sulley (John Goodman) and his sidekick Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal), who harvest screams as a form of fuel in Monstropolis. And business is good for the duo until the evil Randall (Steve Buscemi) is within contention of the office scare record. He leaves a closet door portal on the floor, and a child escapes into Monstropolis and finds herself in the care of Sulley and Mike. As is par for the course with Pixar, »

Review: 'Monsters, Inc.' on Blu-ray

8 November 2009 11:13 AM, PST | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

Pixar burst onto the scene with Toy Story and proved that they were the successor to Walt Disney Studios by providing heart-warming, funny family-friendly animation, using pixels instead of paintbrushes. They followed up with A Bug’s Life, which was another success, and they came right back with Toy Story 2 which was an expected smash.  The question was back then, how long could they sustain the hits and the level of quality. A lot was riding on their fourth release, Monsters, Inc. , since it was to be their third original creation and a gauge of their long-term viability.

Well, we all know what happened. It and every subsequent film has been one hit after enough, proving Pixar was not only the real deal, but a successful font of new ideas. Disney clear had no choice but to advance their partnership by owning the company, which reinvigorated their own franchise characters. »
