A Career-Spanning Conversation with Joe Dante

11 October 2009 4:32 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

We recently published Glenn Kay's interview with Joe Dante discussing the full details on his upcoming film The Hole (read it here). Now, Jason Anders caught up with the director to go back even further. All the way back to 1978, and the recently remade Piranha...

Jason Anders/Fangoria: Let's start with one of your earliest films, 1978's Piranha; what originally inspired you to become involved in filmmaking, and what roads led to you directing one of your first motion pictures, which garnered the respect of major Hollywood names like Steven Spielberg? Also, tell me about the challenges you faced on the production of this film, which was shot in just 30 days.

Joe Dante: I had originally planned to become a cartoonist; it was only during art school that I came to realize I was more inclined toward filmmaking. This was the mid-'60s when the idea of "film school »

Movie Review: 'A Serious Man'

7 October 2009 12:55 AM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

A Serious Man boasts all the hallmarks of a typical Coen brothers film, including delightful meanderings away from the central plot, quirks in dialogue and facial expressions, and random events that have a dramatic effect on the lives of its characters. But for all its resemblance to the average picture from Joel and Ethan Coen, their latest offering is their most challenging, noncommercial work yet.

Set in a largely Jewish suburb of Minneapolis, Minnesota, A Serious Man reflects not only the Coens’ Midwestern roots, but it also focuses on their Jewish heritage. The film’s seemingly unrelated prologue is set in a 19th century shtetl in Europe, and religion figures prominently in both the daily lives of A Serious Man’s characters as well as its protagonist’s existential crisis. Resembling a 1960s retelling of Job’s trials, A Serious Man follows the tribulations of Jewish college professor Larry Gopnik »

First Five Minutes of Princess & Frog

5 October 2009 11:42 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

The first five minutes and forty seconds of Disney's return to traditional 2D animation, The Princess and the Frog, have been posted online, in a partially still-in-progress form. We get a look at the young Princess Tiana (voiced by Elizabeth Dampier), her buddy Charlotte (Breanna Brooks), and their parents: Terrence Howard and Oprah Winfrey as Tiana's wannabe chef father James and dressmaker mother Eudora, and John Goodman as Charlotte's corpulent moustachioed dad Eli. And a frog. And a rather beleaguered cat.The first five minutes are here, where we see Tiana and Charlotte, at Charlotte's palatial abode, being told the story of The Frog Prince by Eudora. There follows some discussion of the girls' rather differing attitudes to frog smooching, until Eli arrives home. It's then a picturesque tram ride to Chez Tiana where James approves Tiana's gumbo, and there's some chat about dreams coming true. The final forty seconds are here, »

What I Watched, What You Watched: Installment #11

4 October 2009 4:04 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

This week, after reading over Laremy's list of Top Ten Coen Bros. Films I figured it was about time to watch the four remaining films of theirs I had not yet seen. On top of that I continued my viewing of the new 13 film Paul Newman DVD Collection with a film I loved that ultimately ended up inspiring me to watch another 1958 Newman film. It was a relatively slow week for me, but there's enough to make for a conversation.

As always, remember you can keep tabs on my personal Netflix queue right here. I now have 50 friends on the movie rental site and would love to have a few more if those of you out there with accounts are interested. Now, here's the recap of my week in movies...

On The Eve Of 'A Serious Man,' The Strange Appeal Of The Brothers Coen

30 September 2009 12:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

By rights, Ethan and Joel Coen should not be the massively successful filmmakers they are. I’m not impugning their talent, skill or artistry with that statement; it's more that their movies are very, very strange. Weird by any standard, which makes it occasionally shocking to sit back and look at their success in popular culture.

Their movies, especially those made in the past ten years, are sold as mainstream motion pictures when they their tone and content should really sentence them to a boutique indie theater existence. When people gravitate towards entertainment that is easy to understand and comfortable to watch, how is it that guys who make something as densely surreal as “Barton Fink” or as willfully grim and ambiguous as “No Country For Old Men” are two of America’s favorite moviemakers?

Were movies like “Raising Arizona” and “O Brother, Where Art Thou” the brothers’ only output, »

In My Opinion: The Top Ten Coen Bros. Films

30 September 2009 1:49 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Ethan and Joel Coen circa 1990 while promoting Miller's Crossing Top Ten Coen Bros. Films With the upcoming release of A Serious Man, the brand new film from the Coen brothers, I decided to put together my personal top ten list of their films. A task that proved much harder than I would have originally imagined. I agonized over this list. Why? Because love isn't a strong enough word for how I feel about the Coen films. No, something more akin to reverence mixed with a healthy bit of obsessive adoration would be much closer to my relationship with their work. They are the kind are filmmakers who make us think, as we sit in the theater, they are unspooling the yarn just for us. Sure, the Coens weave tales of great violence and isolation, but somewhere in there a quiet grace is achieved too. Places 11, 12 and 13 Photo: Universal Pictures / Touchstone »

Five 'Fall' Titles To Celebrate The Autumnal Equinox

22 September 2009 3:30 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

When a hail of raining "Meatballs" earns box office gold over the likes of the bloody, sexy, Megan Fox-starring "Jennifer's Body," it's clear that summer is truly over. Fall is upon us now, meaning that the days of the big Hollywood blockbuster will have to wait until next May. In the meantime, there's plenty of other film fare to look forward to and plenty to look back upon.

Earlier today, our friends at Hollywood Crush devised a list of movies that take place in autumn, but such an array of films is a bit too subtle for my tastes. Just hearing the word "fall" is enough to get my wheelhouse churning, because there are so many movies that have the word in their title... some of 'em good, some of 'em not so much.

For your viewing pleasure, behold our five most memorable flicks with the word "fall" in its title. »
